Description

With the recent end of support for Windows XP, we created an infographic to visually guide you through a smooth migration to Windows 7.

WINDOWS 8 It has received mixed reviews. Dramatic change from the traditional Windows desktop experience. Help desk and other IT support groups could be taxed by the new user experience. Some analysts say it can take as long as a year and a half for vendors to come up to speed on Windows 8 support. CONSIDER DESKTOP VIRTUALIZATION Now might be a good time to also consider moving to a virtual model for the desktop computers. The advantages of VDI include: Easier desktop management, increased security and better backup management Lower costs of deploying applications and easier integration of BYOD. Disadvantages include: Compromised performance; potential problems with some applica tions; network problems can impact productivity and added cost of administering and managing VDI. RATIONALIZE APPS Is the application being used by anyone? Has the application been replaced by a newer one? Is the application costly to maintain? Will the application run correctly under Windows 7? Once you figure out which applications you want to keep (rationalize) the next step is to remediate (“retire”) or upgrade apps that need attention. PREPARE Identify rogue applications and deficient hardware. Determine whether your PCs will need a hardware upgrade or replacement before upgrading. Make use of the many tools and resources from companies like Microsoft and Dell. TRAIN Make use of all the training material, many of which is free, in the form of online classes and videos. Hold classes in your company. Distribute tips on ways users can take advantage of new features in Windows 7. Be prepared for negative feedback, be sympathetic and use it to help other users. Identify in-house “gurus” and enlist their help to “evangelize” the new operating system.
