 Training for a marathon should involve months of steady preparation. Many running coaches suggest that marathon training should begin at least six months before the date of the marathon. For first-time marathon runners, a year or more may be preferable.

 If you do not have much experience running, it is important to get into shape, both mentally and physically. Read up on nutrition, stretching, and other running basics, and then plan a short training route void of traffic, uneven terrain, and other hazards. You may also want to enter some shorter races to help you prepare for your first big race. 5k or 10k races are a good length for beginners, and the healthy competition will spur you to work harder.
