You decide the way you're going to walk Trekking holidays are big business. Millions of people take gentle walking holidays every year, especially in the United Kingdom. But it is important to be very clear from the outset what type of walking holiday you want. And that will depend very much on your attitude and temperament. Are you very adventurous? Do you love the idea of trekking in the Himalayan foothills in Bhutan or Nepal? Maybe walking across solid lava flows in Iceland is more your idea of fun or perhaps you would prefer gently rambling around the Cotswolds or the Lake District. Be clear about what you want. How fit are you? Be sure to assess accurately your level of fitness before you take a walking holiday. Even only moderately fit people can enjoy them, but you won't want your holiday to be ruined by badly blistered feet, aching muscles or a severe injury. There is little point in trekking through the mountains to Machu Picchu if it means you have to be brought back on a stretcher. Crowds or solo There are many companies which will take the hard work and planning out of your walking holiday. Guided walking takes groups of walkers out on a pre-planned itinerary and a guide who knows the area and all the local attractions. The company books the accommodation for you and makes sure your baggage travels ahead to the next overnight stop so it is all there waiting for you at the end of the day. Personality types are important in working out how to pick the best walking holiday for you. Instant friends On guided tours all you have to carry is a small, light pack. It is obviously easier and, if you are a gregarious soul, you will have companionship with the group. Single people often find guided tours suit them best. But it means you have to stick to the planned itinerary - no making spur of the moment decisions. Going it alone Doing it yourself is a lot more work since you have to organise all the planning and booking stops, but it gives you complete freedom. If you want to stay longer in a particular place you can do. If you want to branch off in a different direction there is no reason not to. However you will have to organise the transfer of your baggage, or carry it all yourself. If you are going it alone there is no back-up team to look after you, but you have the wonderful feeling of complete freedom in launching out into the unknown.
