      What is Health? What is Public Health?

Current Health Priorities • Britain has the fastest growing obesity rate in the developed world • Obesity levels in the UK have risen by 300% in 11 years • Physical inactivity in England is estimated to cost £8.2 billion a year

The World Health Organisation (WHO) report on Global Health Risks1 and the associated burden of disease toolkit estimates that the top ten risk factors for early death and disability in the UK are, in order of impact: „tobacco use „harmful alcohol use „high blood pressure „high cholesterol „overweight and obesity „physical inactivity „illicit drug use „low fruit and vegetable intake „occupational risks „poor sexual health

Risks of Obesity • • • • Coronary Heart Disease Type II Diabetes Cancer Mental Illness Cause of obesity • Imbalance between energy expenditure and energy intake. • Environment and societal change Aim - to reduce obesity through encouraging healthier lifestyles; healthy eating and physical activity

Key Policies • Start Active, Stay Active: A report on physical activity for health from the four home countries’ Chief Medical Officers (2011) • Healthy lives, healthy people: a call to action on obesity in England (Department of Health, 2011) • No health without mental health: a crossgovernment mental health outcomes strategy for people of all ages (Department of Health, 2011)

Recommendations: Children and Young People (5 – 18 years) Start Active, Stay Active: A report on physical activity for health from the four home countries’ Chief Medical Officers (2011)

Children and young people (5 – 18 years) Recommendations: •All children and young people should engage in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity for at least 60 minutes and up to several hours every day •Vigorous intensity activities, including those that strengthen muscle and bone, should be incorporated at least three days a week

Benefits to health are: •Improves cardiovascular health •Maintains a healthy weight •Improves bone health •Improves self-confidence •Develops new social skills

Recommendation: Early Years – under 5’s (capable of walking) Start Active, Stay Active: A report on physical activity for health from the four home countries’ Chief Medical Officers (2011)

Recommendation: Children of pre-school age who are capable of walking unaided should be physically active daily for at least 180 minutes (3 hours), spread throughout the day Benefits to health are: •Develops motor skills •Improves cognitive development •Contributes to a healthy weight •Enhances bone and muscular development •Supports learning of social skills

Current Physical Activity Levels • 2009/10, 55.1% of school children across England participated in at least three hours of PE and school sport within and beyond school per week University College London research (BMJ 2013) • 51% of the 6,500 children monitored achieved the recommended hour of physical activity each day • For girls, the figure was just 38%, compared with 63% for boys

Promotion of Physical Activity in Children NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) Groups most at risk of inactivity: •Adolescent girls (aged 10+) •Children from lower socio-economic groups •Children from black and minority ethnic groups •Overweight and obese children

Review of Effects of Dance Interventions on the Health and Wellbeing of Children and Young People Showed evidence of health improvements : • Physical – cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, improved bone mass content, reduced obesity, flexibility • Psychological - reduced anxiety levels, enhanced self esteem and self concept. improved body attitude and physical self perceptions

Current Health Structures • Public Health in Local Authority from 2013 – Ringfenced budget for public health • Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG’s) – manage primary and secondary care services • Health and Social Care working closer together “Health is everyone's business”

Wider partnerships in C&YP health agenda • Schools • Local Authority – – Social Services – Children’s Services – Sports and Leisure – Community Regeneration/Area Management • Extended Services • Children’s Centres

Drivers for C&YP’s Dance and Health • • • • • • Government policy CMO Report New Ofsted Framework - PA School Sports Premium Evidence base and creativity Engaging girls and young women

Making Links with Dance and Health • Find out more about your local CCG and Public Health team and build relationships • Contact Public Health Specialists with remit on obesity or physical activity • Respond to local health priorities • Engage wider partners involved in PA and health

• Invite public health senior leadership and local councillors with health remits to speak at dance shows/performances • Propose and develop joint bids with health that bring additional resource to their area • Cultivate local “dance champions” • Engage partners through seeing work as well as written information
