All writing is a form of communication. And so too, is the essay in XAT. A few tips on essay writing

The common thread The single link across all essays is – a perspective (personal view) of a particular subject , whether it is : ‘ a night to remember’ , ‘ my left foot’ , ‘ India Rising’ or ‘ the allegories in Asterix’.

Opinion All the information might be textual but the essay should still reflect your own opinion. The way you sift, select and order the information is the point of the exercise.

Know your Strengths and Weaknesses !! A lot more difficult to write on whimsical or abstract themes say, a ‘zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance’ for which the writer needs not only knowledge but also literary talent. Easier to write interesting and impressive essays on concrete, well-defined topics such as ‘ World War II – the aftermath’ or ‘ Does racial discrimination still exist ?’ these require just writing talent – something that most people have in varying capacity.

Try to be Interrresting !! A surfeit of facts is one of the most common causes for an essay to be dull and boring. In a good essay, you will find that information is balanced with illustrations, speculations, arguments and examples. It is very important to be interesting than authoritative. Authority should be shown through personality. What you say by how you say it.

The poor teacher !! the poor teacher or evaluator – going through thousands of ‘good’ essays, all vomiting a core of identical information, and many in almost the same style. Oh! My God !! For something different, he / she might actually shriek silently, and read with relief and delight an essay which deviates the least bit from the normal, mundane approach.

Options Even if the crux is the same, interpreting it in a different way, maybe garnishing it with a few examples or anecdotes. Or you could follow an unusual style – ironic / passionate / whimsical – but more importantly lively and individual. One useful way of arriving at new insights into a topic is to bombard it with questions. But such brainstorming should be supplemented with content

Caution a lively and individual style is something very different from an inappropriate style. Don’t get carried away into adopting a style or approach that’s cacophonous/ unharmonious with the contents of the essay. No matter how funny and imaginative your usual Style might be, you must curb your comic style when writing a serious essay topic ‘ a struggle for Independence’ or ‘ racial discrimination’ .

A balanced essay 1. Allocating an appropriate amount of time to each of the arguments you present. 2. When discussing arguments / counter-arguments, try to be unbiased. Don’t try to dismiss them simply because they have happen to oppose the view that you have decided to favour in your essay.

The facts and examples that you state should: 1. Have a subordinate or supportive role only, and do not displace your arguments 2.    Be selective : too many examples make the essay superfluous. Last but not the least, remember that examiners want quality and not quantity.
