Writing your Outline and writing your working thesis statement

Why Create an Outline?  Aids in the process of writing  Helps you organize your ideas  Presents your material in a logical form  Shows the relationships among ideas in your writing  Constructs an ordered overview of your writing  Defines boundaries and groups

Organize your Notes  Make sure there are slug lines (main ideas) on all your cards. Don’t be afraid to change your slug lines.  Sort each main idea into its own pile.  Keep extra cards just in case.  Each pile of cards becomes a main idea in your outline with one pile for each roman numeral.

Use standard outline form  Use a roman numeral for each main idea.  Use a capitol letter for each supporting idea.  Use lower case letters for each supporting detail, example, etc.  See your research packet for an example

Your Topic/Title I. Main Idea Number One A. Supporting Idea B. Supporting Idea C. Supporting Idea II. Main Idea Number Two A. Supporting Idea B. Supporting Idea C. Supporting Idea

your working thesis statement:  should make the purpose of your paper clear to your reader,  cover all the main ideas listed in your outline (each roman numeral)  Should not use personal pronouns (I, you, etc.)  Remember that it is ok to change your thesis statement as you write your paper.

A Good Example  Science is showing that use of fossil fuels is causing climate change. There are several sources of power that do not harm our environment. Some of these sources are solar, wind and wave energies.  Topic: alternative fuels  Main ideas in paper: solar, wind and wave energies.

Another good example  Climate change is happening. More can be understood about climate change by examining its causes, the effects it is having on our weather and health, and possible solutions to climate change.  Topic: Climate Change  Main Ideas: causes, effects and solutions.
