Description

This message focuses on how Soloman’s wrong assumptions led him into sins against God and God’s Word.

“Disobedience”

. . . Everything is meaningless, a chasing after the wind and nothing is gained under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:11

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says . . . the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it – this man will be blessed in what he does. James 1:22,25

The kingdom was now firmly established in Solomon’s hands. I Kings 2:46

Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married his daughter. I Kings 3:1

“The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, ‘You are not to go back that way again.’ He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.”

“When he takes the throne of his king- dom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the priests, who are Levites. It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his brothers and turn from the law to the right or to the left.” Deuteronomy 17:16-20

Assumption #1: I need a huge army (and Egypt is the place to get the best horses and chariots.

Assumption #1: I need a huge army (and Egypt is the place to get the best horses and chariots. Solomon accumulated chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses, which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem . . . Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt. . . I Kings 10:26-28

Assumption #1: I need a huge army (and Egypt is the place to get the best horses and chariots. Sin #1: Not trusting in the protection of the Lord.

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horse- men, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the Lord. Isaiah 31:1,2

Assumption #1: I need a huge army (and Egypt is the place to get the best horses and chariots. Sin #1: Not trusting in the protection of the Lord. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. Psalm 20:7

Assumption #2: I need to fortify cities to protect Israel from all our enemies. King Solomon built the Lord’s Temple, his own palace . . . and the cities of Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer . . . He built up Lower Beth Horon, Baalath, and Tadmor in the desert . . . as well as all his store cities and the towns for his chariots and horses . . . King Solomon also built ships at Ezion Geber, which is near Elath in Edom on the shore of the Red Sea. I Kings 9:15-19,26

Solomon’s fortified cities controlled the major trade arteries around and through the Holy Land. Hazor, Megiddo, Gezer as well as Lower Beth Horon, Baalath and Todmor occupied critical positions along the trade routes within the tribe of Judah. Archaeological Study Bible

Assumption #2: I need to fortify cities to protect Israel from all our enemies. But you will have a son who will be a man of peace and rest, and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side. His name will be Solomon, and I will grant Israel peace and quiet during his reign. 1 Chronicles 22:9-10

Assumption #2: I need to fortify cities to protect Israel from all our enemies. Sin #2: Not trusting in the promise of God.

Assumption #3: I need trade agreements to protect Israel’s wealth and political world agenda.

Assumption #3: I need trade agreements to protect Israel’s wealth and political world agenda. King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter — Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.”

Assumption #3: I need trade agreements to protect Israel’s wealth and political world agenda. Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. 1 Kings 11:1-3

Assumption #3: I need trade agreements to protect Israel’s wealth and political world agenda. Sin #3: Not trusting in God’s Power.

Assumption #3: I need trade agreements to protect Israel’s wealth and political world agenda. Sin #3: Not trusting in God’s Power. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding . . . Proverbs 3:5,6

Assumption #3: I need trade agreements to protect Israel’s wealth and political world agenda. Sin #3: Not trusting in God’s Power. I amassed silver and gold for myself . . . Ecclesiastes 2:8

Why? Solomon did not love God’s Word.

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your Word. Psalm 119:9-11

Lessons for Us: Sin looks beneficial at first. Unacknowledged sin leads to more sin, and may eventually destroy your life. We will experience the consequences for sin in this life – it’s only a matter of time. If you want to be obedient to the Lord – you’ve got to fall in love with His Word.

Baptism Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit Matthew 28:19
