THE WIND

What is the wind? Wind is the flow of gas on a large scale. Winds originate as a result of the differences in atmospheric pressure and these differences occur due to the different temperatures in the air. Cold air tends to move downwards, while hot air moves upwards.

Types of winds. ➲ ➲ ➲ According to their strenght: Gusts Squalls Long- duration winds: - Breeze - Gale - Storm - Hurricane - Typhoon ➲ ➲ ➲ According to the zone: Trade winds Contralisios Monsoon

Trade and contralisios winds. Breezes.

Consequences of the wind. The wind acts as a transport agent, intervenes in anemophilous pollination and in the displacement of seeds. It is also a powerful erosive agent and acts as agent of sedimentation, because when the wind loses speed, it conveys materials from one place to the other.

WIND IN GALICIA. In Galicia we have two different wind situations: - In winter, the entrance of fronts from the Atlantic Ocean originate Southwest winds, which are constant and strong. -In summer we usually have Northeast winds, which in general tend to be soft but sometimes can be very energetic.

Thanks to the strong winds in Galicia, there are many wind farms, which generate power. For example the wind farm in Camariñas. They are apparently clean, non-polluting and create employment. But they have an environmental impact as they need to occupy land and some communities don't want them.

The wind doesn't always have positive consequences. For example the wind these last few weeks caused waves almost eight metres high and "d' Abalar" stone broke, among other things: power cuts, fallen trees... But we mustn't forget that Galicia wouldn't be the same without so much wind.
