Look through the decorative techniques and think about the questions at the end of the slides. Write down your answers and bring to your next lesson so that you are ready to use these techniques to finish your wooden animal.

Decorative Techniques + Finishes Once your pieces are cut and smoothed you will need to think about how to apply the details of your design. You can choose any of the following techniques: -Pyrography -Felt Pieces -Wood stain or varnish

Pyrography This is a technique that uses an electric tool with a very hot point. As you press the point against the pine, it will burn the surface and create a dark mark. You can use this to create the effect of texture. We only have one kit, so you will need to sign up to use this. You will need to plan your work around this and use another technique while you are waiting. This cannot be used if you have just varnished or stained your work as it will be wet. If you burn yourself you must go straight to the sink and run your hand under cold water for 10mins. Ask a friend to alert the teacher. You will then go to pupil reception for any further treatment and to record the accident.

Stain and Wax Applying a stain or wax can add bright colour, or highlight the woods natural colour. It also seals the wood from moisture and protects it. When apply a finish you should brush in the direction of the wood grain. You should use a little to start with and build up the colour. Make sure all parts are covered. You do not want to soak the wood, only use enough to lightly cover. You will need to leave your work to dry for up to 30mins. When waiting you can prepare felt pieces for gluing, or go to the booklet tables to complete any improvements. Use the time wisely! clear You must wear gloves and goggles and apron to avoid staining your hands or splashing. IF you get any in your eye, notify your teacher immediately.

Felt Pieces Using small pieces of felt you can make extra features for your animal. Think about ears, tails, feet, wings… You will have to make a template out of paper first to decide your shape. Afterwards you will pin your template onto the felt and cut this out. You will use a glue gun to apply the felt. The end of the glue gun is very hot. You should hold the wood carefully underneath or to the side and apply the glue away from your fingers. Once the glue has been applied, place the felt on top (do not press down as it will still be hot!). Leave for 30 seconds to cools. If you are not sure it has cooled, check with a teacher. Again, if you burn yourself run burn under cold water for 10mins and notify the teacher so you can visit pupil reception.

Homework: visit and read through the slides. Think about the following and make a list to bring to your next lesson: What techniques will you use and how will you use them? What will you do first, next and last? What Health and Safety will you have to think about? What will you do if you have run out of things to do?! Remember, if you cannot access the internet at home you can go to homework hub, the library or use the computers in the A12 food room. Tell your teacher in advance if you are finding this difficult! It is important you have thought about this for next lesson.
