What if my customers are requesting or planning on installing counterfeit software to help save on costs?  What should I tell them? While counterfeit may be inexpensive to acquire, it will cost them in the long run. The initial savings from acquiring non-genuine software might quickly disappear into the unknown cost of fixing potential problems associated with counterfeit, such as ridding your PC of viruses, losing data, or repairing a business’ reputation if customer data is compromised. Q A Q A Frequently Asked Questions:  Frequently Asked Questions My customers are requesting a PC without an operating system – what do I tell them? There are only two ways to acquire genuine Windows software on a new PC is via the OEM channel, preinstalled on a new PC or via a full packaged retail product. Getting Windows preinstalled via OEM is your customers’ most cost-effective option. If they are planning on using Windows software on this PC, you should tell them that getting it later will be time consuming and less cost-effective. What will customers experience if they have non-genuine Windows on their PC? Non-genuine copies of Windows Vista lose access to key features, have limited access to updates and eventually stop working. First, they will have a constant reminder on their screen that says they are not running genuine Windows software. Second, they won’t have access to all available updates and downloads. Third, they won’t have access to the great new features available in Windows Vista, such as Windows Aero and Windows ReadyBoost. Eventually, Windows Vista will go into reduced functionality mode. Q A Q A Frequently Asked Questions:  Frequently Asked Questions How does Microsoft determine what keys to block? Product keys can be blocked for a number of reasons, including if the product key is abused, stolen, pirated or seized as a result of anti-piracy enforcement efforts. Product keys can also be blocked if they are beta or test keys, if there were manufacturing errors in the keys, or if the keys have been returned. What is validation? Validation is required for many valuable and popular downloads and updates. Validation is a quick, easy, and confidential online process that enables customers to verify whether their Windows Vista software is genuine. Once validated as genuine, customers can gain access to valuable downloads, updates, and more. Q A Q A Frequently Asked Questions:  Frequently Asked Questions What is reduced functionality mode? In reduced functionality mode the users will experience no desktop, no start menu or task bar, and Windows Vista functionality will be limited to the default web browser for one (1) hour periods.
