Windows Operating System Fundamentals: Managing and Maintaining Introduction to Networking Ken L. Mauldin @KenLMauldin
What is a Network? (v.) To connect two or more devices together with the ability to communicate with each other and potentially share resources.
Basic Network Components NIC Connects you to the Network Switch or Hub Connects Devices Router Forwards packets to other networks
Types of Networks Peer-to-Peer – A network of devices with each device acting as both a client and a server – Designed for up to 10 users Server Based –Provides central location of resources and possible user and group management Domain
Types of Packets Unicast One Multicast Broadcast One Many All
TCP/IP Overview Communicatio n Language Suite of Protocols IP Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway /Router IPv4 and IPv6
TCP/IP v4 Address A dotted decimal notation With 4 decimal values Each decimal number is a representation of 8 binary bits A total of 32 binary bits broken down into 4 groups with 8 bits in each group Consist of a network and host address
IP v4 Address Classes Class A – Large Enterprises – 0 – 127 Supports up to 127 networks and 16,777,216 hosts per network Default Subnet Mask of 255.0.0.0 Class B – Mid Sized Networks – 128 – 191 Supports up to 16,384 networks and 65,534 hosts per network Default Subnet Mask of 255.255.0.0 Class C – Small Networks – 192 – 223 Supports up to 2,097,152 networks and 254 hosts per network Default Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Class D – Multicast – 224 – 239
IP v4 Special Addresses Private IP Addresses 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255 172.16.0.0 – 220.127.116.11 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255 NAT APIPA 169.254.0.0 – 169.254.255.254 Loopback or Diagnostics 127.0.0.1 DHCP
Future of IP Addresses IP v6 Address: IP v4 Address are basically gone IP v6 uses 128 hexadecimal bits to make up its address broken down into 16 groups of 8 bits Uses a colon (:) separator instead of a period (.) So what does this mean to us: IPv4 there is a total of 4,294,967,296 IP addresses available IPv6 there is a total of 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 IP addresses available
Summary Networks are designed to share Peer-to-Peer or Server Based TCP/IP is a suite of Protocols IP v4 or IP v6 Use command line utilities to help test and troubleshoot
