1)What wind is? : 1)What wind is? History of using wind energy : History of using wind energy Wind Energy has always been important for mankind The first invention that used wind to create energy is sails. Earliest records go as far back as 5000 B.C. for the first sail. wind-powered boat has been a major contributor to water transportation . This was a very important era in history because there was now another way of transportation in water. Slide 3: Definition of renewable energy : Energy obtained from sources that are essentially inexhaustible (unlike, for example the fossil fuels, of which there is a finite supply)... Benefits of renewable energy??? it is a pollution-free, infinitely sustainable form of energy     it doesn’t require fuel    it doesn’t create greenhouse gasses    it doesn’t produce toxic or radioactive waste. 2)Wind as a renewable energy!!! Wind turbine:Term used for a wind energy conversion device that produces electricity; typically having one, two, or three blades. : Wind turbine:Term used for a wind energy conversion device that produces electricity; typically having one, two, or three blades. Types of wind turbine: : Types of wind turbine: 1. Position of axis: horizontal or vertical. 2. Resulting force acting by the flow: lift or drag3. Tip speed ratio: high speed running machines or low speed running machines. Horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWT): : Horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWT): have the main rotor shaft and electrical generator at the top of a tower, and must be pointed into the wind. HAWT advantages: Blades are to the side of the turbine's center of gravity, helping stability. Tall tower allows access to stronger wind in sites with wind shear. Ability to throw the rotor blades in a storm, to minimize damage. Vertical-axis wind turbines: Have the main rotor shaft arranged vertically : Vertical-axis wind turbines: Have the main rotor shaft arranged vertically Advantages of VAWT: Can be easier to maintain if the moving parts are located near the ground. As the rotor blades are vertical, a yaw device is not needed, reducing cost. Low height useful where laws do not permit structures to be placed high. Does not need a free standing tower so is much less expensive and stronger in high winds that are close to the ground. Usually have a lower Tip-Speed ratio so less likely to break in high winds
