Description

About the necessity of handwriting in the age of computers and smartphones.

In my childhood days there were no computers and pencil was the first thing that I picked up to begin the journey of learning. Nowadays things are a lot different now, children start keying even from such ages that can be best termed as ‘babies’ when he or she is unable to understand its purpose. It is sort of acceptable as long as it doesn’t replace the pen or pencil and paper, as extended scientific researches has shown time and again that there is no alternative to learning through handwriting. Scientific researches have shown that the cognitive functions of the human brain responds more aptly to writing by hand, rather than keying a letter. The motor section of the human brain becomes more alert to the hand forming letters on paper, rather than typing. Hence a child is bound to learn faster and better a new language through handwriting rather than visualizing on screen and keying those. Though that doomsday have not arrived yet, when the pen will only be used to fill forms and sign documents but the reality of that happening cannot be just laughed away, particularly considering the general visible trend increasing more and more in many adults, where they hardly put pen on paper, maybe in weeks or months. It is simply not required. While what ill-effects it has on adults is still a grey area that researches haven’t been able to nail down conclusively, but for children it is definitely a wrong choice or a no-choice. So is it not the time adults should lead the way by showing their progeny that handwriting is irreplaceable, with the advent of technology to any degree?
