Description

L.S. Lowry was a painter, mostly known for using basic colour with rather sad scenery. He was born in November 1887 and unlike most famous painters, knew wealth from an early age. However it did not last and his family had to move from the Manchester suburb to Station Road in Pendlebury, also a neighbourhood which inspired many of his paintings. Although Lowry didn't appreciate the change in scenery at first, he came to love the industrial setting.

Who was L.S. Lowry? When one thinks of great artists then the words eccentric, manic and over-the-top springs to mind. This wasn't the case for Lowry. He was known as a humble and private man who spent many years taking art classes. Since 1905 he attended night classes at the Manchester Academy of Fine Art and the Salford Royal Technical College in Peel. Another big difference between him and his peers was that he actually had a day job which he retired from at old age. Lowry was a rent collector for Pall Mall and even though his job gave him plenty of opportunity to see different surroundings, he never spoke about his career as a painter. This was mainly due to avoid terms like "part time painter" seeing as he considered himself a full-scale artist. Lowry loved to paint the factories that surrounded him and it's safe to say his paintings always depicted a hint of loneliness. He admittedly sought out projects which were based on sadness and scenes of war, especially the damage left by German shells. Oil was his favourite material to paint with because it allowed for more time, but he also had tremendous respect for sketching as well, saying that it was by no means easier than using a brush. Typically his daily routine of walking the streets and doing his job entailed quick sketches of a place he wanted to place on canvas. He considered sketching as a corner stone for his paintings. The passing of his father in 1932 left him with the responsibility of caring for his mother, who became more confined to her bed in her last 7 years after losing her husband. This had a profound effect on Lowry's work in the sense that she required a lot of his attention, giving him less time to paint. During this period some of his most lonely and darkest work surfaced. However this did not affect the love he had for her and after laying her to rest he expressed how the person he wanted to please most wasn't there anymore. After success started to find Lowry at long last, his passion had moved away from what generated the success in the first place. He didn't feel the same emotions in his later life and he based most of his inspiration on the isolation he endured. Lowry firmly believed it sparked his taste for more desolate and depressing work, yet he wasn't in the same place anymore. Celebrity status arrived very late in his life and even then it didn't seem to have much of an impact regarding his humble nature. Until he died in February 1976 his home remained small and untouched by modern style. To view the works of L S Lowry, please visit: www.lowry.co.uk
