Description

A presentation first delivered at the OUG Ireland 2014 conference by Simon Haslam of O-box Products. It introduces the Oracle Database Apppliance (ODA) and discusses how you can use it to easily deploy both databases and WebLogic Server. Two case studies are covered and the presentation wraps up considering when the ODA might be most suitable for your organisation.

| 1010 | 41 Answer with Highest Votes

| 1011 | 41 ODA’s aims* • Simplify and speed up Oracle database deployment • Ease patching & help customers stay on recent versions • (more recently) Provide ‘in a box’ solution for customers and ISVs * I don’t work for Oracle – this is my opinion only

| 1012 | 41 ODA characteristics • Designed by experienced engineers & good practices built-in • Includes sensible optimisations for the platform e.g. huge pages, ASM SAME approach • Fewer choices are required than traditionally  quicker to deploy and import your data

| 1013 | 41 • What is ODA? • ODA Architecture & Provisioning • Database: Project Experiences (Simplyhealth) • Middleware: Project Experiences (O-box SOA)

| 1014 | 41 The Biggest ODA Decision… Physical or Virtual? • physical is traditional database-only mode • most ODA customers AFAIK are running in physical mode today (historical?) • can't easily change after deployment (need backup/restore) Even if you are running only databases you should consider Virtual • Oracle has is separation of Databases into their own VMs (e.g. live and test) Simplyhealth & O-box: We want to run Fusion Middleware on ODA Decision made: we need to use Virtual

| 1015 | 41 Overview of Manual Provisioning Install ODA in data centre Download Virtual: DB (& WebLogic/OTD) templates P & V: Appliance Manager from MOS or E-Delivery Run Oracle Appliance Manager Run Oracle WebLogic Server Configuration Database (EE, RON or RAC) set up WebLogic, software load balancer VMs provisioned… appliance is ready to use! DB only: stop here!

| 1016 | 41 Physical mode (for running databases only) Database: Choice of two 11.2 versions Appliance Manager: ● initial GUI ● oakcli tool • Appliance Manager • Database • Grid Infrastructure Node 1 Node 2 Oracle Database Appliance • Appliance Manager • Database • Grid Infrastructure

| 1017 | 41 Single appliance for database, mid tier & apps • Database runs in the ‘ODA Base’ domain & provides native disk performance • WebLogic, software load balancer run in the DomUs • VMs and CPU pools provide application isolation • Appliance Manager provides VM template and domain management DOM 0 VM Storage Repository ODA Base • Appliance Manager • Database • Grid Infrastructure Node 1 Domain U DOM 0 VM Storage Repository ODA Base • Appliance Manager • Database • Grid Infrastructure Node 2 Oracle Database Appliance Domain U Domain U Domain U Domain U Domain U As of ODA 2.8 we have shared storage repo available for VMs (not shown)

| 1018 | 41 ODA with Application VMs Deploy VMs to run WebLogic Server, Software Load Balancer HA VIP provides single entry point for application clients Oracle VM 3 supported templates DOM 1 Oracle Database Appliance DOM0 ODA Base • Appliance Manager • Database • Grid Infrastructure Node 1 DOM0 • Appliance Manager • Database • Grid Infrastructure Node 2 Software Load Balancer Application VMs WebLogic HA VIP ODA Base Software Load Balancer Application VMs WebLogic

| 1019 | 41 ODA Database Provisioning – outline PHYSICAL • Run OAM Transfer your data

| 1020 | 41 ODA Database Provisioning – outline VIRTUAL • Re-image with Virtual image • Run oakcli firstnet • Install ODA Base • Run OAM Transfer your data This is what’s called the “ODA Virtualized Platform”

| 1021 | 41 ODA DB Provisioning – outline with WebLogic • Re-image with Virtual image • Run firstnet • Install ODA Base • Run OAM • Install WLS & OTD templates • Run ODA WebLogic Configuration Utility Transfer your data & deploy your applications

| 1022 | 41 ODA ODA Networking VM (DomU) VM (DomU) net1 net2 management 1 or 2 ‘public’ networks Networking is 10GbE copper ODA 2.8 added: + fibre option + VLANs interconnect

| 1023 | 41 Patching • ODA version (e.g. 2.8) incremented by patching • Patching • Infra, Grid Infra and Database (can apply infra only, not database) • Currently no automated patching for WebLogic / JDK • Patches are approx. quarterly (following CPUs) • Both physical and virtualized platform patches (released at same time) • Policy is you need to stay not more than two patches behind latest

| 1025 | 41 • What is ODA? • ODA Architecture & Provisioning • Database: Project Experiences (Simplyhealth) • Middleware: Project Experiences (O-box SOA)

| 1026 | 41 UK health insurance provider, started in 1872 (e.g. HSA) 1700 employees, 3M customers Main app covers Product/CRM/Finance Used by ~1000 agents / 600 active Highly Available Oracle Fusion Middleware (WebLogic, IDM & Reports) RAC Database (~2TB) + Data Guard

| 1027 | 41 Simplyhealth’s ODA Journey • Aims: • Replace EoL servers & FC SAN • Migrate from Database 10.2 to 11.2 to stay supported • Improve performance (batch primarily) • Compared ODA to ‘2 servers & NAS’ • Oracle loaned ODA for 1 month. Three success criteria defined: – “Time and ease of setup” – “Performance 30% better minimum” – “No concerns regarding performance and load” • Database was driver; WebLogic etc additional benefit

| 1028 | 41 Mike Doherty Simplyhealth UKOUG Tech13:

| 1029 | 41 Simplyhealth (Database) Experiences • Fiddly initial set-up, iLOM, imaging etc • Character set constraint so used diff DBCA template • Performance more than good enough • Live in <3 months (included 10.2 to 11.2 migration) • Have ODAs for Prod and Pre-prod; considering for test, training and dev environments now

| 1030 | 41 • What is ODA? • ODA Architecture & Provisioning • Database: Project Experiences (Simplyhealth) • Middleware: Project Experiences (O-box SOA)

| 1032 | 41 O-box Products: Middleware Appliances First product: Components: • Oracle SOA Suite • Oracle Traffic Director • Oracle WebLogic Suite • Oracle Database

| 1033 | 41 Where does the Software come from? O-box utility configuration Oracle media packs O-box software The O-box SOA Appliance

| 1034 | 41 O-box Networking management public network is secured and isolated by OTD https://soa.example.com “public” internal

| 1035 | 41 O-box Experiences • WebLogic build is very good… but rest was not quite as simple to develop as we thought! • We add RPMs from Oracle Linux ISO • Multiple domains not yet supported but will be soon • Some constraints (e.g. no API to add disk space) are a bit of a challenge but ODA is evolving quickly • Take care to keep it supportable by Oracle • Control is everything  "O-box Manager" VM

| 1037 | 41 David Sneak peek: O-box Portal

| 1038 | 41 Further thoughts Virtualisation • licence partitioning • certified and supported • it's not vSphere • … primarily hypervisor, not full management suite I/O is modest by modern standards • 2 arrays apparently gives you 400,000 IOPS (redo SSD) & 6,600 (HDD) (NB: figures are old so may be a little out of date) • Good enough for mid-size (benchmarking planned)

| 1039 | 41 Further thoughts EM Agent in ODA Base (DB) but not Dom0 or WLS VMs Deployment time is very fast! • relatively few decisions to make Bundled patching is very impressive • "little and often" philosophy • 2.7 to 2.8 Infra & GI at Simplyhealth: "why isn't all patching like this?"

| 1040 | 41 What’s So Special about ODA? •  quickModern, high spec hardware •  fewer things to go wrongSelf-contained appliance •  DB EE/RON/RAC, WLS are all easily deployedPre-packaged •  simpler, less time consuming processBundled patches •  less time spent in arbitrationSingle point of support •  price isn’t a stumbling blockSensibly priced •  elegant ‘in a box’ solutions like O-box Virtualisation option

| 1041 | 41 Is ODA Suitable for You? • You don’t need more than 3 or 4* at one site • Your biggest database fits with CPUs cores • Your I/O reqs aren’t extreme • You have DB Enterprise Edition • You have a relatively small number of DBs, esp if RAC • Want simplified patching and happy to patch at least every ~6 months Especially if: • Want to consolidate DB & middle tier to one hardware platform * This is not a limitation just my opinion
