Assisting as a doula at birth is a very rewarding experience for women wishing to serve in this way. Nothing compares with the joy of seeing a newborn baby the first time and the doula can participate in this wonderful experience by serving the women in her care. A doula may be a friend, they bring strength, they are able to be teacher as well as becoming stabilizing force to the birth situation. Birth can be a positive and also life changing experience for a women. It may also be a chance for introspection as she feels her body seeking to bring a new life to this very world. She might be surrounded by relatives and friends. A chance for wonder and joy.

A doula's expertise is reassuring and inspiring to the mother in labor. She will help keep the mother and father calm during throughout the time of uncertainty. Unfortunately, not every women receive this kind of support that they deserve during their birth experience. Getting through labor may be a test of character, determination, strength and will. However it is less difficult to complete when an experienced women is guiding the laboring mother - a women who has had your baby herself, a women who trusts in the birth process as the most effective and right way to bring children into the world, a women who knows that birth is sacred, transcendent experience. This special women is called a labor assistant or more usually a doula. She will help mothers have a birth experience that will last them a lifetime. She will assist you when new life enters in this universe, between feelings of joy and fulfillment, and feelings of fear, absence of control and disappointment.

People in the United States , in our culture, view birth as a medical emergency, an event that females need to be "saved from". Most women begin their pregnancies with painful images of labor in their minds. Our highly “advanced" country is among the few cultures that does not provide someone to continuously care for the laboring mother. Doula Skills  Marketing yourself as a doula requires differentiating yourself from the crowd.  Additional services offered can sometimes be the difference between being hired for the job and not.
