As you may already know, both hydraulics and pneumatics are two applications that rely on fluid power – however, the main difference between these two lies in their mechanism of action. While the pneumatics rely on compressed/pressurized gas air, hydraulics usually rely on liquids, be it water or oil. Another major difference between these two systems is in their area of application: the pneumatics is usually used in technology and in the science industry while hydraulics are commonly used in the engineering industry.
In spite of being very different in terms of action, these two systems do share some common points – for instance, they both rely on the force of cylinders and motors to create force. Also, it must be mentioned that while air and gas can be easily compressed, it is virtually impossible to compress liquids like oil or water. Another notable benefit that air has over liquid is the fact that the first one is extremely versatile and it can change its shape at a lower pressure.

Another common point that both of these realms share is that they are both designed to maintain a certain degree of fluid consistency, a degree that is typically predictable thus offering the scientist full control over the entire process. The overall pressure varies greatly, as it is known that hydraulic systems allow a much higher pressure as opposed to pneumatics – the maximum pressure in the case of compressed air is of little over 100 PSI, while in case of oil or water it can exceed 10,000 PSI. This is precisely why hydraulic systems are more commonly used than pneumatic systems in certain industries. For instance, cars use hydraulic systems that rely on hydraulic oil or brake fluid – the car brakes use a cylinder to create pressure on the mechanical parts of your vehicle, thus pushing the brakes on the disks and making the car stop in an instant. As a matter of fact, a vehicle is the best example for illustrating the use of both pneumatics and hydraulics, because pneumatic systems are also used when removing the tires from a car (a compressor). Unlike it happens with a hydraulic system which has a return line, the pneumatic system lacks this return line and instead it has a release valve that is usually inserted into the air compressor in order to let all the air out of it. Last, but surely not least, there is also a massive difference in terms of cost between these two different realms – it often happens that pneumatic systems are far more affordable than hydraulic systems, in spite of the fact that the latter are more commonly used. However, when deciding between pneumatics and hydraulics, the price should be the last aspect to consider and one should not forget the costs associated with running each of these systems in the long run. Different industries and processes require different realms, and it is very important to choose the most suitable one not according to price, but according to their area of application and reliability.
