What is PCB Design? With the PCB or Printed Circuit Board, the electronic industry has completely evolved from a labor intensive, standard manufacturing plan to a heavily automated format. Printed Circuit Boards were specifically designed to factor in circuit needs, automated machine capabilities and component size to make boards which could be easily manufactured in large quantities at affordable prices. Understanding these aspects lay the foundation for PCB design. The Board Almost every PCB design is done on a standard fiberglass board. The G-10 is used most commonly. This material is very affordable, light, sturdy, easy to drill and cut. It is also a very good insulator. Since the current needs to flow in only certain areas, the board needs to be a good insulator. This board also has some other features which can keep down costs. The Printed Circuit In a Printed Circuit Board, electronic components are not connected to each other by soldering wires. In fact, metal lines are carefully printed onto the fiberglass board to set up connections. Whether the metal is deposited onto a printed line or by simply printing a line onto a metal board, the result will be an easily repeatable metalized etch line on every board. Regardless of the process you choose for metalizing, designating the etch lines is carried out by a photographic process. In this process, a photosensitive resist is exposed to a strong light and mask pattern. Moreover, the unwanted parts are washed away, and the remaining parts determine where metal lines will run on the Printed Circuit Board. Concerns Regarding Circuit Design While laying out a PCB design, it is important to consider the type of circuit which is being manufactured. It is also important to factor in the location of high power dissipating components like transformers and power transistors. All the components giving off powerful electromagnetic fields should be located from electromagnetic field sensitive components. If they’re close, they must be shielded. In addition to this, grounds, power inputs and outputs should be near the edges. This makes sure the Printed Circuit Board connects properly to the rest of the electronic system. All these PCB design factors can force issues between the logical circuit of the board and the PCB component layout. The PCB design should also take into account some limitations regarding the component insertion equipment. If the components are too tightly packed, it will defeat the purpose of trying to use automation. Therefore, the PCB designer must consider the insertion equipment before designing the PCB layout. This includes soldering and other hand work required by the technician.
Final Coating Most of the PCB boards have a final coating of insulating spray. The final coating can seal the Printed Circuit Board from corrosion and moisture. However, it can also reduce the dissipation of heat into air. If you want the PCB to have a final coating, the PCB design should consider space for every component. There should be more space for overheated components. In simple terms, PCB design is a standard balancing act which requires the designer to consider many different conflicting needs. The design also needs to create the circuit while being properly buildable. Sensitive components should be isolated from noisy ones in the most cost effective manner.
