So what is cannabidiol CBD and more importantly what does it do The Cannabis plant is a chemical powerhouse that is capable of producing over 400 different compounds many of which also appear in other species of plants and not all of these compounds are unique to marijuana. Over 60 of these compounds are however totally specific to the cannabis plant and the best scientists have called these special compounds “cannabinoids”. Cannabidiol CBD is probably the best-known cannabinoid in the cannabis plant along with THC. Although the two compounds share the same roots they don’t carry the same traits and their effects on the human body are very different. THC is the compound that makes one high and does this by binding to the CB1 receptor in the brain. It does provide some health benefits thanks to its analgesic anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties but the side effects usually outweigh the benefits. This is why THC is not regarded as a suitable treatment solution for many applications with CBD often a better option as CBD has fewer side effects. 1/3 slide 2: CBD on the other hand has a greater affinity to the CB2 receptor interacting differently with the nervous system without eliciting any psychoactive effect. Instead CBD health benefits are numerous including antioxidant antiemetic anticonvulsant and anti-tumoral properties. Moreover CBD counteracts the psychoactivity of THC and acts as a natural antidepressant and neuroprotective agent. The more information that is learnt about CBD the more it appears ready to revolutionize medicine as we know it. Scientific and clinical research—much of it sponsored by the US government—underscores CBD’s potential as a treatment for a wide range of conditions including chronic pain arthritis diabetes alcoholism MS depression schizophrenia PTSD antibiotic-resistant infections epilepsy and other neurological disorders. CBD has demonstrable antioxidant neuroprotective and neurogenic effects and its anti- cancer properties are currently being investigated at several academic research centers in the United States and elsewhere. Further evidence suggests that CBD is safe even at high doses.
