What is this course about? : Politics, Religion (worldview) and ELT Conventional Wisdom: “Don’t talk about religion and politics!” TESL 537: “Let’s talk about religion, politics and ELT!” Course Description in Professor Language: This course engages students in a critical examination of Christianity and English Language teaching in an investigation of the ethical and professional dilemmas that arise when faith and spirituality enter or are barred from the language classroom. Students read, discuss, and present on provocative readings and produce a research paper. Course Description in Plain Language: Lots of missions that “use” EFL Some teachers good, some not so good Secularists take notice They give legitimate criticism, some illegitimate criticism Others from other traditions weigh in 1. What is this course about? 2. Why is the course relevant? : Professionally Hot topic in the field (Routledge) Faith (Worldview) Integration Critical Thinking Clearly articulate your position Clearly articulate the view of the other Explain why you hold your view above all others Personally Know what you believe and why Articulate what you believe and why Understand “the Other” 2. Why is the course relevant? 3. What is expected of me? : Connect your personal and professional goals to the work in this class. Wrestle with the reading. (Not “light” reading.) Refuse to be intimidated by new terms, theories, and philosophies presented in the readings. (Stanford Ency of Philosophy online) Allow your views to be challenged by the literature and your classmates. Be open-minded. Have courage in articulating your convictions. Be sensitive to others, but have thick skin. Be punctual in keeping your assignments. Do not just “mail it in” in terms of quality. 3. What is expected of me? 4.
