How can Web 2.0 help me be a better teacher?

st 21 Century Learners

Their goal: to ensure that today‟s students are well prepared to be tomorrow‟s innovators, leaders and engaged citizens of the world.

Basics of the Survey • Data collected through online surveys and verified through a series of focus groups and interviews. • Since fall 2003, over 1.2 million K-12 students, teachers, administrators and parents representing over 14,000 schools in all 50 states. • Data represents the largest collection of authentic, unfiltered stakeholder input on education, technology, 21st century skills and schools of the future

What do students do regularly with technology outside of school? • Gaming over 64% of students play online • Download music #1 activity by MS and HS students • Social networking 40% of middle school students 67% of high school students • Email, IM, text messaging over 50% of HS students

What do STUDENTS do regularly with technology? • Writing assignments- 74% • Online research – 72% • Checking assignments or grades online – 58% • Creating slideshows, videos for schoolwork - 57% • Email or IM about assignments - 44%

What do TEACHERS do regularly with technology? • Use email to communicate - 93% • Create PowerPoints – 59% • Create or listen to podcasts or videos – 35% • Websites like MySpace or Facebook - 21%

Survey Conclusions…. • This year 60% of parents and 73% of teachers rate good technology skills as important • 74% of high school students consistently identify good tech skills as the #1 skill they need to be successful in the 21st century. • Only 23% of those students feel that their school is doing a good job preparing them for future jobs.

Survey Conclusions…. • Since 2004, students‟ discontent with school rules that limit their access to technology at school has grown by 46% • School rules keep them from using tools they use everyday • The other major obstacle today is the teacher – over 40% of students think so!

Vocabulary Needed! • Tags The subject descriptors given to Web 2.0 based information which can also be used to search out items of interest Web feed/News feed • Feeds are most commonly used with web sites that are frequently updated, like blogs and news sites. • By creating a „feed‟, the author can easily syndicate his or her content in a format that others can access by subscribing to the feed. • When the author changes the content on the site, it‟s automatically updated on the desktop or web page of every single person who subscribes to that feed.


What is an Aggregator? •The aggregator holds a list of web sites and resources that offer RSS feeds. When it‟s opened the aggregator retrieves the information from each RSS feed page listed. •Once subscribed to a feed, an aggregator is able to check for new content at user-determined intervals and retrieve the update.

Blogs • A weblog (usually shortened to blog) is a web-based publication consisting primarily of articles • Most often, articles are listed in reverse chronological order. • Blogging is the posting of journal-like pages to a website. These pages can contain photos or media - mainly focus on written thoughts posted to a website. • Typically, a blog quot;postquot; can be quot;commentedquot; on by others, allowing for discussion on the topic.

Getting Video Ready to Use • Many videos don‟t come ready for immediate use in the classroom. • Sometimes download and converting to other formats is necessary. • My instructions on how to do this are here

Animoto Create video from your pictures. Apply for Animoto in Education account for your students and you will be able to create full-length video, instead of the standard 30 second video.


Social Bookmarking • The ability to save and categorize a personal collection of bookmarks and share them with others. • Users may also take bookmarks saved by others and add them to their own collection, as well as to subscribe to the lists of others.

Photo Sharing Sites • Act as online storage spaces for photos, with the ability to tag and organize each photo, as well as publishing anyone the user selects. • Other users have the opportunity to leave comments for the photographer on any image that has been made available. • Some photo sharing web sites offer the ability to edit photos online, make notes, post photos to a blog and a variety of other features.

Flickr • Flickr is an image and video hosting website • It was one of the earliest Web 2.0 applications – launched in 2004 • In addition to being a popular Web site for users to share personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers as a photo warehouse. • Its popularity has been fueled by its organization tools, which allow photos to be tagged and browsed. • It claims to host more than 2 billion images.

Flickr Resources • Spell with Flickr • Flickr Toys collection

Students can search on Flickr for pictures licensed under a Creative Commons license to use in their presentations and digital stories. GREAT JOB FLICKR in providing this resource!
