Vincent van Gogh:  Vincent van Gogh By Paula Walker Pictures borrowed from www.vangoghgallery.com and www.vangogh.com Introduction:  Introduction We will explore the work of this famous impressionist. Presentation developed for a Fine Arts class. We will view works throughout his lifetime. Topics of Discussion:  Topics of Discussion The life and times of Vincent van Gogh His early works His most famous work His self portrait and thoughts The Potato Eaters:  The Potato Eaters It was during his years in Nuenen that Van Gogh truly emerged as a great artist. Van Gogh's time in Nuenen proved to be a formidable learning experience as Vincent sought to define his own unique style. Many of his portraits of peasants can be viewed as studies through which Van Gogh was able to execute what many consider to be his first great painting: The Potato Eaters. Starry Night:  Starry Night Some consider Starry Night to be his one greatest work of all. It's fascinating to understand that even as Vincent's artistic brilliance climbed to new heights in Provence, so too did his physical and particularly his mental state make similar, radical advances (for the worse). Starry Night was painted while Vincent was in the asylum at Saint-Rémy and his behaviour was very erratic at the time, due to the severity of his attacks. Unlike most of Van Gogh's works, Starry Night was painted from memory and not outdoors as was Vincent's preference. Vase with Twelve Sunflowers:  Vase with Twelve Sunflowers While so many of Van Gogh's works are instantly recognizable to anyone in the world, it may be his sunflower series which are the most famous of his works. Though Vincent had used sunflowers as a subject of his painting as early as 1886, the majority of his bold and beautiful sunflower series were painted in 1888 in Arles, in the hopes of pleasing Paul Gauguin upon his arrival at the "Yellow House". Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear:  Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear Gauguin moved in with Van Gogh in Arles in October. The relationship between Van Gogh and Gauguin deteriorated throughout December. Their heated arguments became more and more frequent. Relations between the pair declined in tandem with Vincent's state of mental health. On 23 December Vincent van Gogh, in an irrational fit of madness, mutilated the lower portion of his left ear. He severed the lobe with a razor, wrapped it in cloth and then took it to a brothel and presented it to one of the women there. The Portrait of Doctor Gachet:  The Portrait of Doctor Gachet The Portrait of Doctor Gachet is one of Van Gogh's most famous paintings. It's notable for a number of reasons. It was painted in the last few months of Vincent's life and the subject has been the focus of a great deal of controversy. This portrait is also one of Van Gogh's most well known since it holds the distinction as the most expensive painting ever sold at auction. On 15 May 1990 The Portrait of Doctor Gachet was sold within three minutes for $82.5 million. This record remains unbeaten, but an ironic footnote to this sale is the recent news that Christie's has purchased the work back for one-eighth the price paid for it. The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, at Night:  The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, at Night Vincent van Gogh's The Cafe Terrace stands as one of the painter's most remarkable works. It is also, without question, one of the most famous produced in Van Gogh's brief but prolific career. Everything seems to be drawn inward, like a vortex, and yet the overall tone suggests tranquillity and not turmoil. The overall scheme is dark, but without the slightest trace of black. More than one hundred years after Vincent painted it, the Cafe Terrace is still in Arles serving drinks to its thirsty patrons. It's now called the Cafe Van Gogh. Final Thoughts:  "As for me, I am rather often uneasy in my mind, because I think that my life has not been calm enough; all those bitter disappointments, adversities, changes keep me from developing fully and naturally in my artistic career." Vincent van Gogh 16 June 1889 Final Thoughts
