Current trends indicate that the use of mobile devices will increase considerably over the next few years (Llamas/Stofega 2013). In addition, studies indicate that the use of simulations in learning arrangements can improve the sustainability of the knowledge acquisition (Ebbers/Macha/Schlösser/Schuhen 2012).This development presents new opportunities for teaching and learning involving the use of mobile devices in teaching approaches based on direct instruction. Research on teaching approaches based on direct instruction has shown that learners often lack motivation and complain that only they themselves are responsible for their learning and progress. The teachers also do not receive the feedback from lessons that determines in large part learning progress and the design of teaching and learning. This lack of feedback can have a negative impact on learning. In this context, there is a lack of general concepts on how to integrate the use of mobile devices in lessons in order to improve the knowledge acquisition. The MTED project (www.mted.de) offers one possible approach. This project is researching the development and delivery of interactive teaching and learning involving the use of mobile devices and is trialling their use in lessons in Germany.
