Use Dedicated Task Light for the Home Office or Study Area lightingever.com /blog/use-dedicated-task-light-for-the-home-office-or-study-area/ A work space within the home may mean a fully functioning home office located in a spare room, attic, basement or even an outhouse in the garden. It may be a study or library, or simply be a desk in a corner of the living or kitchen, or tucked away a landing or hallway. Wherever it is and whatever form it takes, what is crucial is to create the right environment in which to work. The first factor to consider is the background lighting, which is best achieved indirectly in a work space, by light reflected off the ceiling or walls from uplights, down lights or concealed lighting. Secondly, and probably the most important factor for a home office, is the task lighting, which, in its simplest form is a desk lamp. In the past these usually had tungsten lamps, but there days there is an ever-increasing range that use fluorescent or compact light sources. These are far more effective to sit under for long periods of time, as they are much cooler and provide a far more even light. Sometimes, where space is restricted, the ‘home office’ is squeezed into a corner of the room within a self-contained storage unit, perhaps with a pull-out desk. Uplighting from the top shelf of such a unit can be used to provide indirect light, while some under-cupboard lighting below the lowest shelf provides the task light. Here are some tips for the home offices: 1. Ensure that there is a good level of background lighting in the room. This could be uplighting from bookcases or a cupboard, or a wall-wash effect. 2. Always incorporate a dedicated task light so that the light level can be increased for detailed desk work. 3. Make sure that the task lighting is controlled independently from the rest of the lighting, particularly if the home office is within an open plan space. This will allow the rest of the lighting to be dimmed for television viewing, for example, while

the desk area is still kept bright. 4. If the ‘home office’ or desk area is usually concealed within a cupboard, ensure that task lighting is built into the shelves above. The lighting should be locally dimmable, so that the right level can be set for work and for when it is not in use to contribute to the feature lighting in the room.
