Of the 14 million immigrants who arrived between 1860-1900, many were Jews. America offered immigrants employment, few restrictions, a way to avoid military service, religious freedom and a chance to move up the social ladder. Sunday, March 1, 2009

Immigrants who learned English adjusted well to the United States. ASIAN IMMIGRATION China suffered poverty and famine, so many Chinese immigrants came to the U.S. in the mid 1800s. In the West, they worked as laborers, servants ect. Many opened up their own laundries. Sunday, March 1, 2009

Japanese immigration increased between 1900 and 1919. In 1910, a barracks was opened on Angel Island in California. Asian immigrants waited here for immigration hearings. Sunday, March 1, 2009

Nativism Immigration led to Nativism, an extreme dislike to foreigners by the people who were born in America. They tried to limit immigration In the 1800s they were against the Irish In the 1900s they were against Asians, Jews & anyone from Eastern Europe. Sunday, March 1, 2009

Two anti-immigration groups formed. The American Protective Association had 500,000 members. Henry Bowers started the American Protective Association & he hated catholics and foreigners. Denis Kearny, an Irish immigrant, started the Workingman’s Party of California. The Workingman’s Party wanted to stop Chinese immigrants & racial violence resulted. Sunday, March 1, 2009

In 1882, Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act. It barred Chinese immigration for 10 years. It prevented the Chinese who were already in America from becoming citizens. This act was not repealed until 1943. Sunday, March 1, 2009

Definite boundaries existed between the wealthy, middle class and the working class people. Wealthy people lived in the heart of the city in elaborate homes. Urban Problems Crime Fire Disease Pollution From 1880-1900 there was a huge increase in the murder rate Sunday, March 1, 2009

Americans blamed immigrants for the increase in the murder rate. Alcohol contributed to the crime rate late in the 1800s. Contaminated water from improper sewage disposal resulted in epidemics of typhoid fever and cholera. Sunday, March 1, 2009
