+ Universal Design “The design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.”(Burgstaler) Principles of Universal Design Learning: 1) Provide multiple means of representation 2) Provide multiple means of action and expression 3) Provide multiple means of engagement
+ Principle 1: Provide Multiple Means of Representation Provide options for perception Customize Alternate ways Provide options for language and symbols Define vocab Define symbols Provide options for comprehension Make sure teaching method can be understood
+ Principle 2: Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression Provide options for physical action Change methods to get different responses Provide options for expression and communication Multiple forms of media and tools Provide options for executive functions Give them guidelines Support ideas and methods
+ Principle 3: Provide multiple means of engagement MOST IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE Without this principle, the others can not happen Provide options for recruiting interest Individuality Provide options for sustaining effort and persistence Highlight goals Provide options for self regulation Self-assessment
