The Underground Your Alternative Christian Voice http://theundergroundsite.com Underground Friday: Kyle Gattison It is always a super cool sight to see black men own the Rock music genre. Though Rock music has its roots in Africn-American dominated genres Gospel, R&B, and the Blues, black artists who like to rock out are often marginalized. This is unfortunate because when black artists do step over to the Rock side, we get Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix and Living Color and Slash from Guns and Roses. For the most part, Christian Rock mirrors secular Rock with respect to its lack of people of color fronting Rock groups, so when I heard about Kyle Gattison, an indie (black) Christian rocker, I knew we had to feature him on The Underground. 1 / 3

The Underground Your Alternative Christian Voice http://theundergroundsite.com Kyle Gattison is a professional musician, but first and foremost, a worshiper of God. Hailing from the San Francisco Bay area, he has journeyed across California touching many lives. Kyle comes from a long line of spectacular, Godly musicians. Being involved in praise and worship when he was younger and being surrounded by talented musicians, shaped him--he cites those influences as ones that now guide his musical career. He is currently serving as the Director of Worship for HRock SSM and is a worship consultant at several major churches across California. As a recording artist and songwriter, he continues to push for God-centric sounds that redefine Christian music. He longs to see a new generation of worshipers leading the Body, both on and off the stage, hoping that the songs that are sung translate into a lifestyle of worship that honors God. Like usual we asked Gattison five questions and below is his response. What is the most challenging thing about being an independent artist? I think the most challenging thing that I am finding is exposure. There are so many artists, so many songs that it can become overwhelming when one more person comes out with more music. I think in some ways people are over saturated with music and not all of it is good. In my opinion there are also a small amount of significant outlets as compared to the large number of independent artists that are looking to express their heart to God through music. That’s why I am so thankful to The Underground for providing this amazing opportunity. Tell us about "Freedom = Kingdom" Freedom=Kingdom is really a sneak peek into the last few years of my life. It’s a very short summary of what God has been speaking to my heart. The opening song “At The Name” came from time I was spending with God in prayer. He was assuring me that as I understood the access and the authority He has given me to the kingdom I would see heaven invade any and all of lives situation. The song “Dancing” actually came from a moment in worship that was filled with freedom and joy. We celebrated the reality that Jesus had paid the price and victory was absolutely ours! Lastly, “Now I’m Living” came out of a place of catching a new wave of His goodness and stepping into a new level of His love for me. Who is that one mainstream artist you would love to work with, if given the opportunity? I would LOVE to work with Katy Perry. I believe she has such an amazing gifted and I would love to not only work professionally with her but also pick her brain about writing songs and such. Are you involved in the music ministry of any church? 2 / 3

The Underground Your Alternative Christian Voice http://theundergroundsite.com I am involved in ministry at HRock Church in Pasadena, Ca. I serve under an amazing worship pastor, Kenny Peavey. Where do you picture yourself two to five years from now? I really have a passion to see God represented not just in the church but in the mainstream music industry and consequently the world. The WORLD/GLOBE listens to our music and it’s time for Jesus to be represented in it. It doesn’t mean everyone needs to sing “How Great Is Our God” although it’s an amazing song, I simply mean that there needs to be a Tim Tebow, or Jeremy Lin in the music industry. Someone who is skilled at what they do and gives ALL the glory to God for it! That’s where I see myself, on the biggest stages, not for fame or fortune or success but for the world to see what their eyes have always longed to see, the God of Love being accurately represented!
