Present Perfect Look at this phrase: “ ...The same brushes and paints we have used for decades ...” Yes No Artists used brushes and paints before now. Artists use brushes and paints now. Yes Yes This statement implies that:

Present Perfect Now, look at these sentences. They all describe activities that began in the past and still continue. 1. I have lived in Monterrey since I was born. 2. I have been in High School for 3 semesters. 3. We have studied English since Junior High. 4. My sister has helped me to keep practicing. 5. She has spoken English all her life.

Present Perfect The present perfect simple is used to look back on actions in the past  with a connection to the present. It´s used with this time words : ever - never - before  - since - how long - for - just - this - yet – already We also use the Present Perfect to talk about an imprecise time in the past but as soon as we become precised we switch to the Past Simple. Present Perfect uses HAVE / HAS followed by a verb in participle form.

PERSONAL PRONOUN HAVE / HAS PARTICIPLE VERB COMPLEMENT I have done my homework You have lived in Teran since 1998. He has come to the house 5 times this year She has fallen in love with you. It has broken the window. We have gone to Mexico several times. They have seen an UFO.

IN NEGATIVE SENTENCES WE JUST ADD THE WORD NOT AFTER THE VERB HAVE / HAS. PERSONAL PRONOUN HAVE / HAS + not PARTICIPLE VERB COMPLEMENT I haven’t finished my homework You haven’t traveled to Europe yet. He hasn’t called me yet She hasn’t taken the exam.

Remember: We use the Present Perfect with: have or has + Past Participle have I We You They has He She It have not has not + Verb in Participle form

FOR AND SINCE We use FOR and SINCE to say how long something has been happening. We use FOR + a period of time (two hours, six weeks, etc) For example: I haven’t seen you for ages I’ve been working for two hours . We use SINCE + the start of a period (8 o’clock, Monday, 1999, etc) For example: I have lived in Montemorelos since 1998 . I’ve been here since 8 o’clock.

We use FOR and SINCE to say how long something has been happening.

We use FOR + a period of time (two hours, six weeks, etc)

For example:

I haven’t seen you for ages

I’ve been working for two hours .

We use SINCE + the start of a period (8 o’clock, Monday, 1999, etc)

For example:

I have lived in Montemorelos since 1998 .

I’ve been here since 8 o’clock.

ACTIVITY 2. PRACTICE SINCE AND FOR Sarah has lived in Paris ____________ 1995. Paul has lived in London ____________ ten years. I haven’t been to a party ____________ ages. I wonder where Joe is. I haven’t seen him ____________ last week. Jane is away. She’s been away ____________ Friday. Daniel has been in Hong Kong _____________ 2001. I’ve been a nurse _____________ several years. Manolo was an exchange student in Mexico _____________ a whole semester.

PRACTICE SINCE AND FOR Mr. and Mrs. Smith have been married _____________ nearly 40 years. How are you? I haven’t seen you _____________ your wedding. Where have you been? I’ve been here _____________ over an hour. I haven’t had this much time _____________ I was a kid.

ALREADY AND YET We use ALREADY to say that something happened sooner than expected. Already usually goes in the middle of a sentence For example: I have already listened that CD. We use YEY mainly in negative sentences (He isn’t here yet) and questions (Is he here yet). YET shows that the speaker is expecting something to happen. For example: I haven’t travelled to Europe yet.
