Trinity Leeds Launches Next‑Generation Shopping Center: Cisco Enterprise Network and the Land Securities intelligent building vision bring everyday wonder to retail environment.

Trinity Leeds Launches Next‑Generation Shopping Center Customer Case Study Cisco Enterprise Network and the Land Securities intelligent building vision bring everyday wonder to retail environment EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Customer Name: Land Securities’ Trinity Leeds development Industry: Retail Location: Leeds, United Kingdom Number of Employees: 3000 Challenge • Create next-generation shopping center around intelligent building vision to deliver everyday wonder for visitors to Trinity Leeds Solution • Cisco Enterprise Network, incorporating wired and wireless technology, creating integrated IP-based platform for retail innovation Results • Improved visitor security and enhanced customer experience • Comprehensive approach to new media with interactive video screens and wireless access for visitors’ smartphones and tablets • Simplified and unified center management, with CAPEX and OPEX savings Challenge The largest commercial property company in the United Kingdom, Land Securities, attracts 350 million customer visits to its retail and leisure facilities every year. The Trinity shopping center in Leeds, its flagship development, is the size of 13 soccer pitches. This £350 million development includes 120 shops, more than 30 restaurants, and a huge cinema complex. When 130,000 people turned up on the center’s opening day, the new center instantly made Leeds one of the most attractive British shopping destinations. Described as the most digitally-enabled U.K. retail and leisure complex, Trinity Leeds is a technology treasure trove, said to mark the start of a new shopping center generation. It supports the Land Securities vision that it should be an everyday wonder for its visitors. Craig O’Donnell, head of Information Systems at Land Securities, says: “The aim is that every single time people visit Trinity Leeds, they should see something new and something different. Technology plays a fundamental role in making that vision a reality.” Solution Land Securities developed Trinity Leeds around its intelligent building concept, which automates and interconnects over a single IP network all services required by a modern retail complex. Previously those services would have run on separate systems, each with a proprietary network, unable to talk to each other. “Moving onto a common IP platform enables us to deliver consumer services to a level we’ve never reached before,” says O’Donnell. Cisco was selected to provide the network platform that would turn the vision into a reality. Just some of the systems that rely on the Cisco® network are 330 closedcircuit TV (CCTV) cameras, 65 access-controlled doors, 250 energy meters, a sophisticated lighting system in the roof with 918 programmable low-energy lightemitting diode (LED) bulbs, and lifts and escalators throughout the complex. © 2013 Cisco and/or its affiliates. Customer Case Study “The key message is that by implementing a Cisco Enterprise Network, we can leverage new technologies as they come out. It creates a powerful integrating platform for retail innovation. That’s a fundamental architectural change.” Craig O’Donnell Head of Information Systems Land Securities Based on a Cisco Enterprise Network design, the shopping center’s LAN has two Cisco Catalyst® 6500 Series Switches in the core and Cisco Catalyst 3750 Series Switches at the edge. Security is assured by Cisco ASA 5512 Series Adaptive Security Appliances acting as firewalls between the network and the outside world. Internal telephony services for staff and stores run on a Cisco Communications Manager Express with a Cisco C2951 UC Bundle connecting to Cisco 6921, 7942 and 7962 Series Unified IP Phones. An extensive wireless network offers free public Wi-Fi as well as mobility services for shopping center staff. It uses 1200 high-performance Cisco Aironet® 2600 Series Wireless Access Points featuring Cisco CleanAir® technology, all managed by a server-based Cisco Virtual Wireless Controller. The Cisco Communications Manager Express and Cisco Virtual Wireless Controller run on Cisco Unified Computing System™ (UCS®) C220 Series Rack Servers. “To run a development of this scale, one needs a network that’s reliable and robust,” says O’Donnell. “We’ve used Cisco for a number of years because we can’t risk a building not being able to open due to technology failures. Cisco has the best-inclass solutions we need to run our intelligent buildings.” Results All voice and data travels over the Cisco Enterprise Network, which reduces complexity by eliminating the need to run multiple networks. Among the services supported, intelligent energy monitoring enables the center to pinpoint exactly how much power is used by each tenant and re-charge accordingly. CCTV enables Trinity Leeds staff to track visitor movements and work with local police to keep watch. Footfall is monitored from mobile phone signals, creating heat maps that dynamically show busy areas. That capability allows more security staff to be deployed where needed, while also providing useful information for retailers. All Trinity Leeds systems are becoming more intelligent; they can already monitor suspect situations and send warnings to control room staff. Over the next three years further integration will see, for example, access control and building management systems creating alerts that trigger CCTV cameras to focus on what’s happening. “When 135,000 people turned up on the opening day, they used social media like Facebook and Twitter to comment on the center. The Cisco network simultaneously supported that vast number of people. That’s the power of an intelligent building.” Craig O’Donnell Head of Information Systems Land Securities Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the mall. Visitors can use a Trinity Leeds customer app on their mobile device in the center, and customer service personnel also use iPads over a VPN, for example to deliver customer advice. Says O’Donnell: “When 135,000 people turned up on the opening day, they used social media like Facebook and Twitter to comment on the center, as well as posting video on YouTube. The Cisco network simultaneously supported that vast number of people. That’s the power of an intelligent building.” Trinity Leeds is the first mall where Land Securities has provided giant digital screens: there are seven, of which four are interactive. With video running over the network, they show promotional information and dynamic content from the Internet, such as traffic information. Another innovation is an interactive video wall in the so-called Trinity Kitchen area, where visitors can play interactive games and post Instagram content immediately from their smartphones. An iZettle wireless point-ofsale system has also been provided for the street vendors who rotate their services in Trinity Kitchen. Automation and greater energy efficiency are reducing operating costs, while installing a single network reduced capital expenditure during the build phase. “The key message is that by implementing a Cisco Enterprise Network, we can leverage new technologies as they come out,” concludes O’Donnell. “It creates a powerful integrating platform for retail innovation. That’s a fundamental architectural change.” © 2013 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. This document is Cisco Public Information. Page 2 of 3
