By Dr. Andrew Carver

 An accomplished podiatric surgeon, Dr. Andrew Carver served as one of the first volunteers with the Baja Project in Mexico. Through this project, Dr. Andrew Carver and other surgeons provide no-cost surgical treatment to children born with clubfoot.

 Most often a congenital condition, clubfoot refers to an abnormal positioning of the feet in which the toes point downward or rotate inward. Physicians typically begin treating clubfoot as soon as possible after birth to give the feet time to re-position. Many cases are treatable with a non-surgical casting method that allows the doctor to move the feet into a position as close to normal as possible. The legs remain immobilized in that position until the next level of treatment. Once the child can walk, he or she wears bracing splints at night for two to four years.

 Some cases of clubfoot do not respond adequately to non-surgical intervention. In those cases, an experienced surgeon releases or lengthens the tight tendons and ligaments holding the foot in its clubbed position. In some cases, a surgeon has to adjust certain bones in the ankle and hold them in place with temporary wires. As with non-surgical clubfoot treatment, surgeries require follow up splinting or other immobilization.
