ELECTRICITY GENERATION USING TRAIN WHEELS: ELECTRICITY GENERATION USING TRAIN WHEELS Presented By : P. Dhinesh E. Gawtham Sibi II-EEE NEED FOR NEW POWER GENERATING IDEAS: NEED FOR NEW POWER GENERATING IDEAS The survival of industrial undertakings and our social structures - on low cost and uninterrupted supply of electrical energy. The advancement of a country is measured in terms of per capita consumption of electrical energy.   2/27/2014 2 Power generation using train wheels FOUL MARK : FOUL MARK The mark where the train’s speed i.e., fuel supply is cut off which is usually 1200m from junction for any type of service Then the train moves only by moment of inertia 2/27/2014 3 Power generation using train wheels SOURCE OF ENERGY: SOURCE OF ENERGY The energy stored in the train cannot be fully recovered by regenerative braking . We are going to tap that wasteful energy and convert it into electrical energy. This method can be easily understood from the following block diagram Battery Fly wheel Roller Dynamo Train Wheel Gear box 2/27/2014 4 Power generation using train wheels INNOVATION :  INNOVATION Salient features Construction of the train wheel Construction of the rails Foul mark point Rail joints. Our paper focuses on the generation of electrical energy in an innovative and simple manner. 2/27/2014 5 Power generation using train wheels ROTATIONAL ENERGY TRANSFER :  ROTATIONAL ENERGY TRANSFER We are going to use Rotational Energy for our power generation. When compared to other renewable resources like solar energy, fuel cell etc, the rotational energy has high efficient methods for producing electricity 2/27/2014 6 Power generation using train wheels CONSTRUCTION OF THE TRAINWHEEL: CONSTRUCTION OF THE TRAINWHEEL Consider the two rollers, one is rotating, and another is at rest. Once rotating roller touches the static roller here rotational energy is transferred to the static roller. Then the static roller rotates. We can assume that the rotating roller as the train wheel, and the another roller as the static roller.   2/27/2014 7 Power generation using train wheels Cont….: Cont…. 2/27/2014 8 TIP Power generation using train wheels CONSTRUCTIONAL DETAILS OF TRAIN WHEEL AND RAILS : CONSTRUCTIONAL DETAILS OF TRAIN WHEEL AND RAILS Only the large thickness cylinder is going to fit on the rails The small thickness (plate shape / tip) part is used only for supporting and to protect from derailing The tip portion is used as driving media in our paper. 2/27/2014 9 Power generation using train wheels Construction of rails : Construction of rails In Indian railway, there are two types of rails used. One is 52 Kg and 60 Kg rails. The 52 Kg rail has less web length than the 60 Kg rails. Location of the plant – Foul Mark At this point, all the train speeds are decreased to 30 Km - 35 Km, and the fuel supply is stopped. The minimum time to cross this point for each train is 3 minutes. The time taken between two trains to cross that foul mark is 5 minutes. Therefore, we choose this point for our plant. Since the input speed is somewhat constant and it will be in tolerable limit. 2/27/2014 10 Power generation using train wheels Principle of operation: Principle of operation The train wheel (tip / clearance) touches the roller, it starts rotating according to the rotational energy transformation principle . Detailed operation On the inner side of the rails (web), we place a special constructed roller. The roller is coated by a rubber ring which is used to increase the friction coefficient, between the train wheel and the roller and it decreases the sparking 2/27/2014 11 Power generation using train wheels Cont….: Cont…. Initially, the train wheel (clearance) touches the roller, it starts rotating . Similarly, when the other wheels touch the roller, it rotates continuously. It gives approximately rotation of 3,000 rpm. the mechanical input is given to the dynamo through gear arrangement. Then the electrical output used for charging the battery. 2/27/2014 12 Power generation using train wheels Cont….: Cont…. The amount of voltage is depending upon the number of dynamos. Then the output is given to the lead acid battery for charging. Then the charged battery can use for various applications. 2/27/2014 13 Power generation using train wheels Cont….: Cont…. Some times the clearance may vary, at that time we can go for shaft with disc drive arrangement. That Disc drive has some reference stress value. When the stress increases, the shaft automatically bends, then the load comes to normal position, shaft regains its original position. 2/27/2014 14 Power generation using train wheels FLY WHEEL: FLY WHEEL To compensate the rest time, Flywheel is coupled in shaft. A flywheel does not maintain a constant speed; it simply reduces the fluctuation of speed. A flywheel controls the speed variations caused by the fluctuation of the turning moment during each cycle of operation. 2/27/2014 15 Power generation using train wheels Cont….: Cont…. In machines where the operation is intermittent, the flywheel stores energy form the power source during the greater portion of the operating cycle and gives it up during a small period of the cycle. the energy from the power source to the machines is supplied practically at a constant rate. 2/27/2014 16 Power generation using train wheels ADVANTAGES : ADVANTAGES We do not need to make any holes on railway tracks, why in the sense there always holes on the track joints. By increasing the gear ratio, we can get high electrical output. At that time, we can go for generators.   . 2/27/2014 17 Power generation using train wheels Cont….: Cont…. Since we are going to charge the battery, so we do not worry about the continuous output. Heavy traffic cities like Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, etc., This System can be easily adopted. Less and simple maintenance is required. Even a lineman can maintain easily. There is no impact on environment. 2/27/2014 18 Power generation using train wheels APPLICATIONS :  APPLICATIONS We can generate electrical energy less than Rs. 2.50 / unit This electrical energy can be used as free power supply for railway users such as water supply, to charge their mobile phones, laptops etc. 2/27/2014 19 Power generation using train wheels Cont….: Cont…. And it can be used to supply for railway station equipments light, fan, signal lights etc. We can implement this system at both entry and leaving point in the railway station 2/27/2014 20 Power generation using train wheels CONCLUSION: CONCLUSION SINCE THE NEED OF THE ELECTRIC POWER IS IN GREAT DEMAND , WE AS ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS SHOULD BE IN THIRST FOR NEW IDEA OF POWER GENERATION. AS ENERGY CAN never BE DESTROYED WE SHOULD TRANSFORM IT INTO THE FORM WE CAN USE. 2/27/2014 21 Power generation using train wheels THANK YOU !: THANK YOU ! 2/27/2014 22 Power generation using train wheels
