T/V Forms Investigation on its usage 09/03/2009 Vásquez Gómez Rubén Montes Guerrero Laura Daniela

Conclusions derived from the investigative task on the V/T forms Terms of address seem to be, for many, a keystone of civilized communication, and to some extent they are correct, but often fall into the mistake of misjudging an individual for his/her way of using the language. Spolsky (1998) states that; “with the growing egalitarianism of modern life, there has been a slow breakdown in the formality of address systems” (p. 21). This opinion can be translated to reality in the complex sociolinguistic nature of Tijuana, the farthest of the Spanish speaking world (viewed from a geographical point), were the interaction with the English language has left its mark on how we speak Spanish. The use of the T/V forms that a person uses depends on gender, age, place of birth and origin of the parents. The first factor that marks a pattern in the usage of the T/V forms is age. Depending on the place of origin of the parents, it seems to be that the younger the person, the greater the inclination that will be present on the use of the T form, versus the V form. But this does not write a clear equation on how this phenomenon occurs, since there is not an absolute age were all will use the T form (let us speculate on the model presented on figure 1.1) and, in consequence, although there is an age were the V form is completely absent, we have to emphasize that the sample in this investigation is considered between 0-19 years old, not that we asked a new born, so for scientific purpose only this age is represented by a lack of language. We also included the following rubrics: 0-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50+ years old for our survey. Figure 1.1 self 9 elaborated 8 7 6 0-19 5 4 20-29 3 2 30-39 1 40-49 0 Father Mother Father Mother 50> T V The age that uses no V form would be when language has not yet been acquired, but this does not seem to have a clear impact on the investigation.

Our first approach to this question was to determine if the place of origin was a significant factor in the use of T/V forms. The results immediately showed that the place of origin was crucial in determining the use of the V form. To consider the place of origin as a crucial factor, we have to define it as both the place of origin of the parents of the subject, and the place of origin on the subject. Since it takes three generations to completely break the linguistics habits of a family group, this can be evidenced on the usage of traditional sayings (but this statement is based on opinion, an investigation must be done to prove its veracity). On figure 1.2 we can observe how they are related. The anomalies can be explained by means of acquisition of linguistic habits from the community were the given subjects interacted. A particular case is that of Mario Lopez, age 46, born and raced in Los Angeles, California, as an English native speaker of Mexican family, who learned Spanish as a second language, and refers to his parents in the T form, differing from the expected V form common in people who learn Spanish a second language. The second approach was to determine if gender also played a part in the equation. Notice that when doing this survey only 65% where men, and 35% where women; as we can see in figure 1.3. 12 Figure 1.3 10 Gender 8 chart 6 4 2 0 Masculine Feminine 0-19 10 20-29 7 3 30-39 6 4 40-49 4 6 50> 4 6 Gender played a big role in this investigation, the factor lead us to perceive that men had the tendency to use T form with their parents, as opposed to women who we found had the tendency to use V form, and this was also shown in other lines of investigation which threw almost the same results as ours. We came to the conclusion that men are more informal than women, not to mention that the age factor and the place of origin also play a significant role in this equation, about the place of origin, our survey showed that people form the south of Mexico who moved to Tijuana changed from a V form to a T form, others maintained the same form, living in this specific zone has an influence in how people direct themselves to others. We found also that the generation gap and other factors such as the way the people in the survey where raised had much to do with the use of the forms. The usage of T/V forms is merely a formality now a day, it depends mostly on the person, and as younger generations grow old new forms of address are introduced and others fade away, the exciting part is recognizing those changes and mold ourselves to them as we go along.
