İSTANBUL TOUR GUIDE :  İSTANBUL TOUR GUIDE TOPKAPI PALACE:  TOPKAPI PALACE Slide3:  When Sultan Mehmed II captured Constantinople in 1453, he found the palaces of the Byzantine Emperors in such ruins as to be uninhabitable. He chose a large area on the broad peak of the Third Hill as the site of his first imperial residence. Topkapi Palace was more than just the private residence of the Sultan and his court. It was the seat of the supreme executive and judiciary council, the Divan and the training school, the Palace School. Slide4:  Topkapi Palace Museum is open between 9:00 am-5:00 pm everyday except for Tuesdays. Tickets are  purchased in the gateway to the Second Court. The tickets cost 12.000.000 TL.(equivalent to 8 USD or 7 EUR) per person in 2003-2004 season. The treasury section needs a separate admission fee and costs 10.000.000 TL. There is a discounted fee for the students. The Harem Section can be visited with a separate ticket in the ticket office near the Harem entrance. The tours to Harem are operated every half hour from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. The tickets cost 15.000.000 TL(11 USD or 9 EUR). Slide9:  The building is nearly a square and covered with a dome of 23.5 m.(77 feet) in diameter and 43m (140 feet) high. There are  four colossal standing colums of 5m. in diameter (16.3 feet) which give the basic support to the building. The mosque has 260 windows which let the sunlight diffuse into the building quite nicely. When visiting the Blue Mosque, one should remember the prayer times, five times a day. First one in the very early in morning, second at noon time, third in afternon, fourth in evening and last fifth before going to bed. The mosque is closed at prayer times for 1-1.5 hours.
