Touchmark hosts a themed lunch every month, and the recent gathering gave many couples married more than 60 years an opportunity to share stories and photos. Each photo had its own personality and story. Don Marshall showed a picture of himself right before he returned to war. With only 48 hours until he had to leave, Don married the glamorous 19-year-old Mildred. “She is just as glamorous today as she was in her photo, 70 years ago,” says Don. Jim and Fannie Cate shared that they have been married 67-and-a-half years. Fannie showed a photo of her standing alongside her new, tall, handsome husband. She’s pictured wearing a chic, simple suit with a small hat. The third-longest married couple was Bud and Doris Wright, who tied the knot almost 65 years ago. Several of the men shared stories of wedding pranks, such as a handcuffed groom and best man. Also, one groomsman strategically planted smelly cheese in the newlyweds’ car. The couples also offered their insight to successful marriages. At one point, when talking about how to get through hard times, Sally Hancock said that they communicate like this, “Can you explain that to me? I do not understand.” Then, as if on cue, one husband smiled and added, “And, the wife is always right.” TOUCHMARK AT MT. Volunteering and connecting with others (cont.) For Don Kiser, a former engineer, listening to and serving people has always been part of his life. Don oversaw a team of engineers while working at General Telephone & Electronics Corporation in California. “The most important skill for managing is to listen and to hear what people tell you,” says Don. “People need to know you care.” His last assignment continued to stretch his listening skills, as he worked as the head of the Human Relations Department. Don’s caring demeanor is evident in his volunteering. He diligently does the Touchmark reader board, which highlights a fun weekly event. Rain or shine, Don gathers the letters and puts together a message to inform and invite residents. Don has also been involved in the yearly holiday toy donation project. “While Don has such a humble attitude about this project, he is a crucial member of this volunteer team,” says Angela Stewart, Touchmark memory care administrator and Life Embrace your style Are daily demands overwhelming your schedule? Enrichment Wellness director. Don and the team craft and paint wooden toys that they donate to local children. “I do enjoy working in the shop and making the toys,” says Don. “It’s a good project to use my head and work with my hands.” Don and his late wife moved to Central Oregon 17 years ago, and two years ago, Don moved to Touchmark after his wife passed away. Don shared that he knew he needed to go somewhere he could socialize. His friends lived at Touchmark, and he knew it would be a good fit. On top of jumping into the volunteer opportunities at Touchmark, Don also joined the weekly singing group. “I just started singing when I came to Touchmark and really enjoy being a part of the group as well as the resident holiday choir that performs,” says Don, who admits that while he sings with a group, he’s never tried karaoke. But he’s willing to give it a try next time it’s on the calendar. To keep fit (and ready to volunteer and sing!), Don loves to hike the River Trail below his home or walk to the Old Mill and River Bend Park. He also participates in the Power Fit exercise class. “The instructors do a good job at gauging the level of difficulty for people in the class,” says Don.

The scientific community is also looking more at the outcomes and benefits for older adults who volunteer. The psychosocial and mental health benefits have been studied for several years in regard to reduced risk factors for depression, loneliness, and isolation. A newer focus is the physical health benefits. In 2013, Carnegie Mellon University researchers looked specifically at the relationship between volunteerism and lower blood pressure.
