The following tips demonstrate the ways in which talent management is an essential factor for success in established businesses and in startups:

 1. Identifying talent types: By identifying talent types, a manager can better highlight talent gaps and assign employees to complementary roles. This eliminates problems such as the duplication of work or the placing of an employee in a position for which he or she is unqualified.

 2. Effective use of data: It is easier to get data from a broader range of sources than ever before. This can make it tempting to measure performance by as many metrics as possible. However, it is more effective to determine what data is relevant to the question at hand before looking at the relevant data points. Not only does this help filter out irrelevant information, but it also facilitates the setting of clear, more easily achievable goals.

 3. Exercising empathy: Managers sometimes lose their ability to be empathetic. However, empathy is important to cultivate, as it creates a bond between an HR professional and a company employee that can serve as a source of motivation and understanding. This, in turn, helps the employee perform better at his or her job.
