Slide1:  TRANSPORTATION CHOICES an interdisciplinary curriculum created at Touchstone Community School in Grafton, Massachusetts by Polly Brown and Kate Keller Fall 2002 TRANSPORTATION TIME LINE - typed text version TRANSPORTATION TIME LINE :  TRANSPORTATION TIME LINE This time line shows transportation through history. It was originally displayed as two timelines on long rolls of paper: a time line with a green background, that started in 8000 BC and went to 2000 AD, on which a year equaled one millimeter, and every meter equaled 1,000 years; and a time line with a blue background, which showed just two hundred years, 1800 to 2000. On the blue time line a year was five centimeters, and every meter equaled 20 years. Each time line was a total of ten meters long. A short blue piece of paper on the green time line (representing the last two hundred years) showed how much room the years on the blue time line would take on the green time line's scale. The blue time line was like a zoomed-in picture. A lot happened in those two hundred years, so we needed more room. After we were done, we wished that the blue time line had started in 1700, because we didn't have enough room to fit all the dates for that century. After we displayed the time line at Transportation Night, we decided to project into the future, using what we had learned about progress in the past to predict what changes might occur next. Therefore the final time line extends into 2030. TRANSPORTATION TIME LINE :  TRANSPORTATION TIME LINE The red dates show the history of muscle-powered transportation, and maps and navigation. The blue dates represent the history of boats and canals. The green dates show the history of rail transportation and trains. The black dates show the history of cars and roads. The magenta dates with * next to them represent "landmark dates" that were added to the time line during our transportation celebration evening. Parents and students worked together to determine which dates should be included.
