Thirteen Standards for Reaching Parental Proficiency

If you wish to use this presentation for educational and non-profit purposes, please contact Dr. Lourdes at: lourdesdr@bellsouth.net The purpose of this presentation is to provide immigrant parents the opportunity to discuss some of the standards that parents must meet in order to reach parental proficiency.

Provide for their children’s physical, emotional and social needs

Overcome immigrant-related challenges

Don’t let themselves fall into a “role reversal” situation

Assume an “I can” attitude – victorious vs. victim

Know that a quality education leads to a “quality life”

Know the role they need to play in their children’s education

Have high academic expectation for their children

Know that academic proficiency is the result of commitment, focus, feedback and strategy formulation

See “failure” as a source of information on how to get better

Establish a positive and productive connection with their children’s teachers

Make reading a “life style”

Make homework part of the daily routine and not a “battle field”

Build a strong character in their children’s life
