MERITS OF BLOGGING. RELATION OF BLOG WITH MEDIA. INTERRELATION OF BLOG WITH OTHER FIELDS. What do mean blog? CONFUSED? : What do mean blog? CONFUSED? A blog (a fusion of “Web” & “Log”) is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order OR it can also be defined as a frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), audio (podcasting) and are part of a wider network of social media. Micro-blogging is another type of blogging which consists of blogs with very short posts. Technorati is one of the global & major player in blogging. As of September 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 106 million blogs HISTORY/PAST/EVOLUTION OF BLOG: : HISTORY/PAST/EVOLUTION OF BLOG: As everyone has a past blog also has one. Before blogging became popular, digital communities took many forms, including Usenet, commercial online services. In the 1990s, Internet forum software, such as WebEx, created running conversations with "threads". The modern blog evolved from the online diary, where people would keep a running account of their personal lives The term "weblog" was coined by Jorn Barger on 17 December 1997. The short form, "blog," was coined by Peter Methyl, who jokingly broke the word weblog into the phrase we blog in the sidebar of his blog in April or May of 1999. Open Diary launched in October 1998, soon growing to thousands of online diaries. Brad Fitzpatrick, a well known blogger started LiveJournal in March 1999. Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan launched in August 1999 (purchased by Google in February 2003). In 2004, the role of blogs became increasingly mainstream, as political consultants, news services and candidates began using them as tools for outreach and opinion forming. Some blogs were an important news source during the December 2004 Tsunami such as Medecins Sans Frontieres, which used SMS text messaging to report from affected areas. In January 2005, Fortune magazine listed eight bloggers that business people "could not ignore": Peter Rojas, Xeni Jardin, Ben Trott, Mena Trott, Jonathan Schwartz, Jason Goldman, Robert Scoble, and Jason Calacanis. TYPES OF BLOG : TYPES OF BLOG By media type: 1) A blog comprising videos is called a vlog. 2) A blog comprising links or url is called a linklog. 3) A site containing a portfolio of sketches is called a sketchblog or one comprising photos is called a photoblog. 4) Blogs with shorter posts and mixed media types are called tumblelogs. It does not provide commentary. 5) A rare type of blog hosted on the Gopher Protocol is known as a Phlog. 6) A blog written by a mobile device like a mobile phone or PDA is called a moblog.  7) One used for the sole purpose of spamming is known as a Splog 8) Micro-blogging is a form of blogging that allows users to write brief text updates (usually less than 200 characters) and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user. These messages can be submitted by a variety of means, including text messaging, instant messaging, email, MP3 or the web. MERITS OF BLOGGING : MERITS OF BLOGGING As the debate about blogs changing the face of journalism rages on, many media courses have already started including the topic in their curriculum. Blogging is the future mirror of society as it will reflect people’s voice, opinion, suggestions, views, need globally. So blogging is necessary component as it will help the trainee media guys to be ready for the future needs. They have almost changed the face of journalism. It helps us to exercise our writing skills & it can act as a portfolio that will help showcase their skills and help in the job market." Blogging can help us to discuss social problems, get suggestions on how to resolve them & indirectly a resolution. It is used for Knowledge sharing and knowledge management It is used for customer service. It is used for interactive journalism. It is used for communication. It is used for self expression. It is used for Learning. It is used for self-marketing. It is used for Campaigning/social reform. It is used for community building. It is used for customer service. It is used for Experience tracking. In here several employees use weblogging tools to share information internally which is also know as k-log. It is used for Story telling. Slide 7: Mentioned above is an example of blogging wherein it is used as a request , an appeal, pledge & also an indirect advertisement of handmade goods. One of the important role of the blogs is as a media. As a media blog helps us to know what is happening in the world like earthquakes, Olympics, elections etc. As a media it helps us to know the product before buying by just reading the feedback in the form of blogs of the users of that product. As a media it can sell a product by using picture blogs, weblogs. Nowadays many companies use blogging to advertise themselves & the values of the companies. Slide 8: PICTURE BLOGGING: A site containing a portfolio of sketches is called a sketchblog or one comprising photos is called a PHOTOBLOG. Everyone knows that a picture/expression gives a vivid idea of a communication in comparison to a voice. Therefore picture bogging is the easy & effective media to pass on our message globally. Picture blogging used for demonstration or to bring a revolution like we have in above blog as a lady holding a banner showing protest against Olympics. One can also use blogging to show their golden moments. So that it can last long. Many companies now use blogging for the feedback from their customers so that they can improve their quality & be in touch with their customers. VIDEO BLOG : VIDEO BLOG Video as a citizen media tool. Video cameras became popular in developed countries in the early Nineteen Eighties. But personal video diaries published to mass audiences didn’t appear until much later, in 1993. The first video blogs or ‘vlogs’ (using video for blogging) started to appear as late as 2004. With the increasing popularity of YouTube in 2005, internet users had access to the free uploading of videos and could now easily embed those videos in their blogs for distribution. Mainstream media outlets, like CNN’s iReport, also make spaces for citizen journalists to share and distribute their videos. Sites like Witness uses videos and online technologies to expose human rights violations across the world. In places like Tibet where media is censored the citizen media video reports are one of the only ways to know what is happening. Today, media is owned by the people who use it that means BLOG. There is no Us vs. Them. Actually, the secret is that the brands and advertisers never did control the message – they only thought they did. But with technology, WE are the media … makes it easier to understand that. I had a wonderful experience recently, which I also wrote a case study about. I was looking at buying a bicycle and actually went through the entire process with the help of blogs, where a Google search landed me at a blog post with active conversations, negative and positive, taking place between existing users, potential buyers and as a pleasant surprise, the marketer too. The blog allowed me to make my decision. Of course, the last mile of dealer interaction play the ultimate role on what I call the difference between “Sold” and “Nearly Sold”, but the entire episode convinced me about the impact of the of the social media layer, that is making a real difference on the ground. In this case Rajesh purchased a bicycle just because of the blogs of the users of the bicycle. So this means blog is also a effective salesmen. It helps both consumer as well as the trader & indirectly both gets the benefit.
