The role of vendors in ensuring content availability CSE Annual Meeting Vancouver, May 20, 2008 Kevin Cohn Director of Client Services
About me • Statistician - Carnegie Mellon University • Publisher - Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. • Vendor - Atypon Systems, Inc.
About Atypon • Publisher services company based down the road—Santa Clara, California • Current clients include JSTOR, Blackwell Synergy, and Annual Reviews • Technology partner for CrossRef’s citation linking resolution system • Launching soon: American Chemical Society, BioOne, Walter de Gruyter, and more
Atypon participation • Portico: 14 participating publishers • 26% of all Portico participants • 50% of Atypon publishers • JSTOR (sister organization) • C/LOCKSS: 11 participating publishers • Two CLOCKSS board members
Supporting archiving • Encourage participation in Portico and LOCKSS (one or the other or both) • Archiving is a cost center; have a small one- time fee and no recurring fees • Provide tools for auditing the process (what has been deposited/crawled) • Handle any and all technical questions that arise from participation
Protection against... • Publishers going out of business • Titles being cancelled • Online editions being discontinued
Association of Bay Area Governments
Our goals • Provide the highest level of availability that is technologically possible • Constantly monitor availability from dozens of locations around the world • Be able to overcome catastrophic events without any disruption of service
Multiple data centers • Extended our publishing platform to run on a geographically distributed network • Data centers are in an active-active configuration (no warm backups) • Total redundancy of all content and services using real-time synchronization • If one data center becomes unavailable, the others continue to be available
JSTOR • Uses Atypon’s multiple data center capability • Global presence: Denver, Princeton, and Manchester • 99.99% uptime goal (4.5 minutes down per month)
Summary • Vendors should encourage publishers to participate in archiving initiatives • Need to provide the appropriate tools and service at a cost that makes sense • Continue to invest in technology to provide the highest level of availability
