The Role of The Specialist Nurse in Endometriosis

Specialist Nurses        Are invaluable for people with long term conditions Save money through fewer hospital admissions and GP appointments Reduce post operative hospital stay times due to enhanced support in the community Provide faster access to appropriate specialist/clinic thereby reducing waiting times Free up Consultant Appointments Provide direct specialist advice and management to patients and families Royal College of Nursing. Specialist Nurses. Changing Lives, saving money.

Job Roles  Nurse Led Clinic  Consultant Clinic  Telephone Clinic  Ward Work  Non Clinical Duties

Vetting Referrals to Nurse Led Clinic  Prevent booking of conditions other than endometriosis i.e. endometrial ablation  Prevent referrals to health professional who does not have the expertise and or skills to deal with the problem  Reduce number of appointments for remote referrals

Nurse Led Clinic           All day once weekly 1 hour new slots 30 minute follow up slots To see all new referrals, both confirmed cases and women with symptoms suggestive of endometriosis Discussion re condition, previous investigations Treatment (dependent on life stage, age, severity of symptoms and impact on lifestyle, desire to conceive) CNS essential in helping patient make choice Perform Ultrasound Scan if necessary Provide information on treatment and make recommendation to GP if medical or hormone treatment chosen Provide detailed information leaflet on benefits risks and complications of surgery. Follow up appointments to see post op patients at 6 months

Telephone/Postal Clinic 1 year and 2 years post op  To input data onto BSGE database

Consultant Clinic  Review patients at 3 months post op, see new patients from out of county and review follow up patients from nurse led clinic  MDT meeting to establish those requiring specialist input, bowel specialist, urologist, pain team.  Patient Satisfaction survey

Ward work         Familiar reassuring face for patients Accompany Consultant and laparoscopic trainee fellow in the morning. Review patients in the afternoon to establish whether fit for discharge See pre op patients prior to surgery See post op diagnostic patients to deliver findings Liaise with urology department to have urological stents removed Arrange follow-up at 3 months in Consultant Clinic Take contact details to make post op phone call 1 week later Provide education and support for nurses and other health professionals

Non face to face contact       Telephone Contact E mail contact Contact of General Public through Trust website Weekly meeting with secretary, check and sign letters, deal with patient queries Weekly meeting with Inpatient co ordinators to discuss timing of operation, administration of GnRH analogues and bowel prep Input data onto BSGE database at initial appointment, 6 months, 1 and 2 year follow up by telephone/postal questionnaire

Endometriosis UK       Invaluable role in the support of women with endometriosis as health professional and specialist centre not always available Provide link between sufferers and specialist centres Plays a vital role in helping women and their families learn to cope with endometriosis Helpline provides information, as well as emotional support and a listening ear Online community allows women to connect with other endometriosis sufferers in a safe, online community In conjunction with the Royal College of Nursing and the BSGE provide specialist training for nurses and help in defining the ideal role

Cornwall Support Group     gives those affected by endometriosis the opportunity to meet and share their experiences with others who understand their situation Invaluable asset to the Endometriosis Nurse Specialist Role especially in raising awareness of the condition, providing support for sufferers when the nurse not available Help in promoting Endometriosis Awareness Week Nurse attends meetings and fundraising events
