THE POWER OF NOW R . G O P I N AT H

1 THE POWER OF NOW BY R.GOPINATH God has given us many gifts. Like good parents, nice family, physical strength, ability to think and the list goes on endless. But amongst all these the biggest gift is “NOW”. 1

We can not change the past, we can estimate and plan for the future, but we can act now. For now is fully under out control. We can act now. Our future rests on NOW. Our future begins NOW. So we can disconnect with our past and connect to the future we want NOW. A person born poor need not continue to be poor. He can disconnect with his past (poverty) and connect to a future (prosperous) that he wants to, by acting NOW. That means that we have not be thrusted with a destiny, but we shape our destiny ourselves by doing or by not doing something NOW. This is applicable to every single person on this Earth. If we labour now, we become prosperous in future. If we learn now, we become experts in future. If we lay seeds now we get fruits in future. If we waste time now, we get into crisis later. Gradually by using our now we are creating our future. It is not as if we come into this world with a pre-written future, but we carve out our future from now. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishna, had used his now during young age in studies, and he became a professor. By using now he disconnected from his poor past to earn so many awards, recognitions and titles: King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science. Spalding Professor of Eastern Religion and Ethics at Oxford University. Knighted in 1931 by George V. Bharat Ratna 1954 Order of Merit 1963 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade 1961 Templeton Prize 1975 (he donated this amount to Oxford University) MA thesis published at his age 20 Congress of the Universities of the British Empire 1926 Delivered the Hibbert Lecture at the Harris Manchester College Oxford 1929 Principal of the Harris Manchester College Oxford 1929 Appointed Earl of Willingdon 1932 Vice Chancellor Banaras Hindu University 1939 Indian Representative at UNESCO 1946 Ambassador of India to the Soviet Union 1949 2

Vice President of India 1952 President of India 1962 If success is so simple to achieve, then why do not every body achieve it? We were talking about acting NOW. Actions are initiated by feelings, feelings are triggered by thoughts. An ugly caterpillar transforms itself into a very attractive butterfly in about 28 days. For this transformation the biggest contributor is mother Nature. We have also seen ordinary and common people transforming into unique and great personalities. The major contributor for this transformation is their “THOUGHTS”. When we change our thoughts, we change our destiny, because thoughts generate feelings and feelings initiate action NOW. Therefore the changes that we make in our life, depends on our thoughts. Happy thoughts releases lubrication into our system and all parts of our body work smoothly in fine coordination like a symphony in play. Whereas a negative thought releases toxin and friction in the system and the parts slow down and create a strain. There are three factors about thoughts that we must understand: Compounding effect 2) Diverting the track and 3) Reflexive thoughts. Compounding effect: What happens when you search internet using a keyword? Let us say you type “Automobile” in google search, millions of websites linked to automobiles appear before you. If you type hospitals then millions of websites linked to hospitals appear before you. You get millions of the one word you typed. So does our mind also. When you generate a thought, millions of things linked with this thought appear before you (in your mind), and as you dwell more into it, million more appear before you. Irrespective of whether it is a positive thing or a negative thing. With a result, positive thoughts are negative thoughts left to themselves they tend to intensify. 3

Let me give an example: You pickup the phone to call a stranger for an appointment to explain a life insurance, right then you think, he may not respond well, or he might get annoyed with the call. This thought brings to focus such negative responses you got in the past. They multiply. This generates a sad or a helplessness feeling inside you. Because of this feeling, you might stop calling and pickup any other job on hand. Because this call was not made, we may not get the appointment. Look at another scenario, You pickup the phone to call a stranger for an appointment to explain a life insurance, right then you think, this person might respond well. A lot of people have responded well so also this person will. All the present clients you are having now have been approached like this only. This thought also multiplies, and gives a feeling of enthusiasm, hopes and confidence. You now make that call. Diverting the track: Just like a child playing with a doll, on seeing a new doll throws off this and picks the other one, our mind can be diverted to think about another thing, by consciously thinking about the another thing. Look at the above example of a phone call to a stranger. We can replace a negative thought with a positive thought and this positive thought will multiply and intensify. It is like you typed a word in google search and as it started placing millions of websites before you, you type another word and search soon the new list of websites open out before you. We consciously think and produce thoughts. Let us say we are solving a puzzle, we think and produce thoughts. We are writing a poem, we think and produce thoughts. In that sense we create a thought by thinking. Whenever we produce a negative thought by looking at the logical outcome of the event, immediately it generates a sad feeling that blocks the normal functioning of all the parts and they do not coordinate with each other. Right at this time consciously think about the likely positive outcomes and then the mind is now engrossed in finding related links and soon there is a relief. Reflexive thoughts: 4

These are thoughts that we produce instantly, in micro seconds, in response to a stimulus from outside. For example when you hear the siren of an ambulance or the bell ringing of a fire engine, suddenly a sense of alarm is raised inside us. When someone shows face at us, a instant thought of anger flashes from inside. This reflexive thought plays a big role in our day to day functioning. Particularly in selling. When a client speaks out an objection, an immediate thought of anger at times or helplessness or frustration gets triggered. If we can not control this, then we might land into trouble by saying something damaging or ineffective. We will continue our discussion on how to handle these reflexive thoughts, better even on how to produce good reflexive thoughts in the coming issues of PREMIUM. It is quite pertinent here to mention the beginning of this article, that NOW us the biggest gift given to us. We can disconnect with our past and connect with the future that we want NOW. We create our future by doing something or by not doing something NOW. Actions are triggered by feelings. Feelings are generated by thoughts and therefore thoughts shape our destiny. 5
