The New catechism of the catholic church: Presented by: Bro. Ryan R. Mejillano National Secretary Catholic Faith Defenders Inc. National Annual Convention May 25-26, 2013 The New catechism of the catholic church introduction: introduction GUARDING THE DEPOSIT OF FAITH IS THE MISSION WHICH THE LORD ENTRUSTED TO HIS CHURCH, and which she fulfills in every age . The principal task entrusted to the Council by Pope John XXIII was to guard and present better the precious deposit of Christian doctrine in order to make it more accessible to the Christian faithful and to all people of good will What is it?: What is it? The echo of Christ voice resounded to us down throughout the ages in the Catholic Church. Why was it given?: Why was it given? Catechism of the Catholic Church, a text promulgated by my Predecessor, Blessed John Paul II , with a view to illustrating for all the faithful the power and beauty of the faith. This document, an authentic fruit of the Second Vatican Council, was requested by the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops in 1985 as an instrument at the service of catechesis] and it was produced in collaboration with all the bishops of the Catholic Church. Moreover, the theme of the General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops that I have convoked for October 2012 is “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith”. This will be a good opportunity to usher the whole Church into a time of particular reflection and rediscovery of the faith – Porta Fidei What was its structure?: What was its structure? 13 The plan of this catechism is inspired by the great tradition of catechisms which build catechesis on four pillars: the baptismal profession of faith (the Creed), the sacraments of faith, the life of faith (the Commandments), and the prayer of the believer (the Lord's Prayer). 14 Those who belong to Christ through faith and Baptism must confess their baptismal faith before men.[16] First therefore the Catechism expounds revelation, by which God addresses and gives himself to man, and the faith by which man responds to God (Section One). The profession of faith summarizes the gifts that God gives man: as the Author of all that is good; as Redeemer; and as Sanctifier. It develops these in the three chapters on our baptismal faith in the one God: the almighty Father, the Creator; his Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour ; and the Holy Spirit, the Sanctifier, in the Holy Church (Section Two). PowerPoint Presentation: 15 The second part of the Catechism explains how God's salvation, accomplished once for all through Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit, is made present in the sacred actions of the Church's liturgy (Section One), especially in the seven sacraments (Section Two). 16 The third part of the Catechism deals with the final end of man created in the image of God: beatitude, and the ways of reaching it - through right conduct freely chosen, with the help of God's law and grace (Section One), and through conduct that fulfils the twofold commandment of charity, specified in God's Ten Commandments (Section Two). 17 The last part of the Catechism deals with the meaning and importance of prayer in the life of believers (Section One). It concludes with a brief commentary on the seven petitions of the Lord's Prayer (Section Two), for indeed we find in these the sum of all the good things which we must hope for, and which our heavenly Father wants to grant us. What is the reason for its structure?: What is the reason for its structure? Organic unity of the four (4) parts. Can be said in two parts – God’s gift to us thru Christ and our response. Lex orandi , lex credendi We cannot separate the life of grace to the life of prayer, profession of faith and how we live What are its major themes?: What are its major themes? HIERARCHY OF TRUTHS. What is this? When we say Hierarchy of Truths, it does not mean that there are less truths and unimportant, but simply means that some truths flow from others their source and origin their principle of organization. Principal Truth of Truths – 1. Holy Trinity 2. Incarnation 3. Church 4. Dignity of the Human Person The Unity of Catholic Faith How to use it? : How to use it? 18 This catechism is conceived as an organic presentation of the Catholic faith in its entirety. It should be seen therefore as a unified whole. Numerous cross-references in the margin of the text (numbers found at the end of a sentence referring to other paragraphs that deal with the same theme), as well as the analytical index at the end of the volume, allow the reader to view each theme in its relationship with the entirety of the faith. PowerPoint Presentation: 19 The texts of Sacred Scripture are often not quoted word for word but are merely indicated by a reference (cf.). For a deeper understanding of such passages, the reader should refer to the Scriptural texts themselves. Such Biblical references are a valuable working-tool in catechesis. PowerPoint Presentation: 20 The use of small print in certain passages indicates observations of an historical or apologetic nature, or supplementary doctrinal explanations. PowerPoint Presentation: 21 The quotations, also in small print, from patristic, liturgical, magisterial or hagiographical sources, are intended to enrich the doctrinal presentations. These texts have often been chosen with a view to direct catechetical use. PowerPoint Presentation: 22 At the end of each thematic unit, a series of brief texts in small italics sums up the essentials of that unit's teaching in condensed formulae. These "IN BRIEF" summaries may suggest to local catechists brief summary formulae that could be memorized. PowerPoint Presentation: 161 1257 CCC 846 PowerPoint Presentation: CCC 161 PowerPoint Presentation: CCC 1257 PowerPoint Presentation: Footnote 335-336 PowerPoint Presentation: LG 14 PowerPoint Presentation: CREED Doctrine CODE Morals CULT Worship summary: summary “Caritas Christi urget nos ” (2 Cor 5:14): it is the love of Christ that fills our hearts and impels us to evangelize . It is in this sense that that the Year of Faith will have to see a concerted effort to rediscover and study the fundamental content of the faith that receives its systematic and organic synthesis in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Here, in fact, we see the wealth of teaching that the Church has received, safeguarded and proposed in her two thousand years of history. From Sacred Scripture to the Fathers of the Church, from theological masters to the saints across the centuries, the Catechism provides a permanent record of the many ways in which the Church has meditated on the faith and made progress in doctrine so as to offer certitude to believers in their lives of faith. conclusion: conclusion 11. In order to arrive at a systematic knowledge of the content of the faith, all can find in the Catechism of the Catholic Church a precious and indispensable tool. It is one of the most important fruits of the Second Vatican Council . In its very structure, the Catechism of the Catholic Church follows the development of the faith right up to the great themes of daily life. On page after page, we find that what is presented here is no theory, but an encounter with a Person who lives within the Church.
