The Importance of Foot Care for Diabetics

The Importance of Foot Care for Diabetics For more than 30 years, Dr. Jane Schlecker, an endocrinologist in Brooklyn, has cared for patients with diabetes mellitus. Dr. Jane Schlecker completed her endocrinology fellowship at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center and her fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and now maintains a busy private practice.

The Importance of Foot Care for Diabetics For patients with diabetes mellitus, foot care is a constant area of concern . The high blood sugar levels that the condition causes may over time lead to a type of nerve damage known as neuropathy, which causes the patient to experience numbness, tingling, burning, pain, loss of sensation or a combination of these. The latter can be particularly dangerous, as numbness in the feet may cause diabetic patients to be unaware of an injury to the foot. This can lead in turn to deep infection of the tissues, bone and possible amputation. This is especially true when the patient has poor circulation combined with neuropathy.

The Importance of Foot Care for Diabetics For this reason, patients with diabetes mellitus should check their feet on a daily basis for any cuts, sores, redness, or swelling that they are unable to feel. By identifying these abnormalities early, patients can seek treatment and avoid permanent damage . Similarly, diabetic patients should take special care to protect their feet since they may be unable to feel warning signs such as heat, cold, pain, and pressure. By wearing socks and shoes at all times, and by engaging in physical activity to promote circulation, patients can proactively protect the health of their feet.
