According to an article by The Southland Times, Queenstown is turning into an international tourist magnet. Statistics New Zealand stated that they recorded more than 1.8 million guest nights in 2013, which became a new record. The number of domestic visitors also increased, reaching almost 950,000. The Commercial Accommodation Monitor (CAM) revealed that the leading accommodations today are independent and resort hotels, motels, caravan and camping grounds, luxury villas, and backpacker hostels. The occupancy rate in all these increased from 5.3% to 79.9% during peak season. Economic Growth Depending on the season, tourists visit Queenstown to try a specific experience. The Remarkable Mountain, for instance, is popular during winter because of its slopes. Beginners to advanced skill level tourists visit the peak to go skiing, snowboarding, and riding the lift to get a bird’s eye view of the town. Different festivals, like the American Express Winter Festival, boosted the local economy as well. The growing number of tourists led to the expansion of Queenstown Airport, New Zealand’s fourth busiest airport. This includes projects related to check-in areas, baggage reclaiming and reclaiming halls, retail expansions, and fencing upgrades. According to Statistics New Zealand, the tourism industry helped increase New Zealand’s employment rate by 8.8%.

Cultural Impact Cultural events and festivals in Queenstown focus on the Maori culture and lifestyle. Many locals and tourists visit during the Kiwi Haka Show, as they can listen to Maori songs and stories, watch traditional dances, and view remarkable exhibits. This also provided employment opportunities for locals. The Church Lane is currently one of the leading food and beverage hubs in Queenstown. Even if it went through different renovation projects, locals still preserved historical buildings and turned these into cafes and shops. It’s like an old meets modern lane. The growth of this side of New Zealand can serve as a head start for its rising economy. As tourism in Queenstown continues to grow, it creates more job openings for locals and increases the profit of nearby accommodations.
