The Gift of the Holy Spirit : The Gift of the Holy Spirit Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” Acts 2:38 – 39 Points to Ponder : Points to Ponder What is the Gift of the Holy Spirit? What is the context of Acts 2? What does Joel tell us about Acts 2:38? What is the “Promise?” What does Acts tell us about Acts 2:38? What do other NT passages say? The Gift of the Holy Spirit : The Gift of the Holy Spirit What is the Gift of the Holy Spirit? : What is the Gift of the Holy Spirit? Personal Indwelling of Deity – non miraculous literal and bodily indwelling when one is baptized into Christ. Eternal Life – salvation granted to all who obey gospel. Miraculous Gifts – qualified, temporary and applicable only to the NT era. The Context of Acts 2 : The Context of Acts 2 What is the Context of Acts 2? : What is the Context of Acts 2? Apostles promised baptism of Holy Spirit (Acts 1:6-8). Miraculous birth of the ”church” on Pentecost. Miracle of “mighty rushing wind.” Miracle of “flames of fire.” “speaking in tongues.” When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4) Baptism of Holy Spirit and Miraculous Power: What is the Context of Acts 2? : What is the Context of Acts 2? But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come :And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Peter quoting Joel 2:28-32 Joel’s Prophecy and Miraculous Power: Joel 2 and Acts 2:38 : Joel 2 and Acts 2:38 Last Days – Heb 1:1, Is 2:2 Pour spirit out – miraculous outpouring All flesh: - Jew and Gentile Sons and Daughters – no discrimination of gender Young and Old – no discrimination of age Servants – no discrimination of social class Blood, fire, vapor of smoke – miraculous signs Call on Lord will be Saved – salvation (Acts 22:16) Joel 2 and Acts 2:38 : Joel 2 and Acts 2:38 Joel’s Prophecy Call on Lord Be Saved Pour out Spirit Sons and Daughters All Flesh Peter’s Sermon “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’ Acts 22:16 What is the Promise? : What is the Promise? What is the Promise? : What is the Promise? Personal “non miraculous” indwelling? Where in scripture is this promised? Where in scripture does the HS work in an individual in a non-miraculous way? If HS is non miraculous how do we know when and if it is working? What is the Promise? : What is the Promise? Eternal life? Eternal life (salvation) is part of the context. Scheme of redemption is promised in scripture. Does fit the context of Peter’s preaching. But where is “Salvation” referred to “The Gift of the Holy Spirit?” Context indicates more is going on in Acts 2 than simple preaching and salvation from sins. What is the Promise? : What is the Promise? Miraculous Power and Spiritual Gifts? Joel promises miraculous power – Joel 2 John promises Baptism of HS – Matt 3:11 Jesus promises HS – Jn 14:26, 15:26, 16:13 Jesus promises power from on high – Luke 24:49 Jesus promises Baptism of HS – Acts 1:5 The Gift of the Holy SpiritIn The Book of Acts : The Gift of the Holy SpiritIn The Book of Acts What Does Acts Tell Us? : What Does Acts Tell Us? Gift of the Holy Spirit How does Luke use this phrase in Acts? Personal indwelling or Miraculous? What Does Acts Tell Us? : What Does Acts Tell Us? Acts 8:14-20 – Philip and Samaria When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."  Peter answered: "May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. What Does Acts Tell Us? : What Does Acts Tell Us? Acts 10:45 – Peter and the Gentiles While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." Gift of the Holy Sprit was Miraculous What Does Acts Tell Us? : What Does Acts Tell Us? Acts 11:15 – Peter and the Gentiles "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?" Gentiles received “SAME GIFT” as Apostles The Gift of the Holy SpiritIn Other NT Passages : The Gift of the Holy SpiritIn Other NT Passages What Does the NT Tell Us? : What Does the NT Tell Us? 1 Corinthians 12:4 – Spiritual Gifts There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit . . . Gifts of HS were Miraculous What Does the NT Tell Us? : What Does the NT Tell Us? 2 Timothy 1:6 – Timothy had a Spiritual Gift For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. Timothy’s GIFT was Miraculous. 1 Timothy 4:14 – Timothy had a Spiritual Gift Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. What Does the NT Tell Us? : In every instance where “Gift” is connected to the “Holy Spirit” miraculous power is under consideration. We should not assume Acts 2:38 has anything other than miraculous power in mind. What Does the NT Tell Us? What Does the NT Tell Us? : What Does the NT Tell Us? Valid Questions: If the “Gift of the Holy Spirit” is not applicable today, why does Acts 2:38 seem so universal and why is it connected to salvation? If there is no “Gift of the Holy Spirit” today then what about “Repentance and Baptism?” Mark 16 and Acts 2 : Mark 16 and Acts 2 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. . . And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. . . and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Spiritual Gifts : Spiritual Gifts Temporary – 1 Cor 13:8-10 Qualified and Limited – Acts 8:18 The Gift of the Holy Spirit was a qualified promise and was only given to those of the 1st century. Once the age of miracles had passed the “Gift of the Holy Spirit” also passed away. It took an apostle’s hands to impart the Gift of the Holy Spirit. Conclusion : Conclusion What would you have expected? You hear the miraculous wind You see the tongues of fire You hear the apostles preach in tongues You hear “miracle” passages from Joel You hear about a promised “Gift of the HS.” Would you have imagined that Peter was promising to believers a non-miraculous personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit?
