The First Commandment With Promise The blessing that comes with life long honor to your parents.

Introduction The Bible is full of “commandments.” The “Ten Commandments” are widely known in the O.T. while the N.T. has numerous commandments. But how many Christians pay any attention to a commandment tied directly to a promise? Exodus 19:5-6; Deut. 28

Children, Obey and Honor Your Father and Mother History behind Paul’s words. The original context dealt with the “Land Promise” and how Israel would continue in the haven of God’s safety while they served Him. Paul takes the principle of the Old commandment/promise and applies it to Christians under their current circumstances.

Children, Obey and Honor Your Father and Mother Disrespect for parents seen in physical and verbal abuse of them by their children was so serious it was designated a capital offense. Commandment 5 was a serious matter! Other ancient law-codes, e.g., the Code of Hammurabi, also respected parental authority and prescribed severe consequences, although not the death penalty. Exodus 21:15,17

Children, Obey and Honor Your Father and Mother Children, obey your parents in the Lord. Broadening the principle to include children under the authority of their parents. There is no greater way to begin honoring your parents than by obeying them. Obedience reflects: respect for authority, humility under authority, and the ability to transfer this principle to other areas – especially unto the Lord. Exhortation: children – do what your parents ask of you immediately with joy .

Children, Obey and Honor Your Father and Mother Honor your father and mother. The primary force behind this statement are for (older) children to care for their parents if/when needed. Cp. 1 Tim. 5:3-5; Matt. 5:4-8 It is important to note that while we have programs and facilities to serve the needs of elders, there is nothing like children honoring their parents in their old age. Application: those who faithfully heed this commandment bring numerous blessings upon themselves, their families, even society itself.
