What value do rock stars, professional athletes and movie star/celebrities create for humanity or society? Content. They provide content and entertainment. They may help build a culture. Good or bad. That's it. As society we allocate genres to the type of music, acting or sports. Society then has to pay to consume this culture each according to his means and ability. The game, concert and movie are quickly consumed and quickly forgotten. A new game, concert or movie is just around the corner on Friday. "If you can't do you teach" is a universal mantra describing the work of teachers. The transfer of knowledge to new members of humanity is a necessity to build better and more knowledgeable human beings that can contribute to society and improve upon the present throughout their lifetimes. Most teachers during their academic tenure regardless of grade or level will relay necessary knowledge to tens of thousands of individuals. Several decades ago it was deemed sufficient to have a high school education. Today even a Bachelor's degree is not sufficient for most professions. Masters degrees are fast becoming the norm. Hundreds of billions of dollars are being spent on research. Despite all the resources committed to research humanity has only managed to uncover roughly 80% on what's on dry land, probably not more than 15% of what's in water and maybe less than 0.001% of what's in space. Space that we understand as "space" today. Yet we as society and humanity in general choose to compensate teachers and researchers to the tune of "as little as possible" cut education budgets and then expect the output of 12-16-18 years of education to result in highly educated knowledgeable individuals that may contribute to the development of humanity and society. Are markets not then in disequilibrium if entertainment providers whether they act well, sing well or catch a ball well are compensated many tens, hundreds or thousands of times better than a researcher that may cure cancer or a teacher that can build humans into contributing members of society? Where have we gone wrong?
