The Complete Guide to Life Skills for Today’s Youth

Life skills have been defined as “the abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that
enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life”

Key Life Skills

Life skills include psychosocial competencies and interpersonal skills that help people make informed decisions, solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, build healthy relationships, empathize with others, manage money and cope with managing their lives in a healthy and productive manner.

The fact remains that many students are not taught the necessary means and strategies to become successful adults, not only in the workforce, but in life as well. It is true, however, that they do eventually figure it out. After a period of struggle and a lot of advice, they learn to navigate the workings of the business world. But imagine the success that they would have, if they are given the necessary tools and techniques to negotiate the various challenges they encounter.

This programme which has the 6 R’s as its foundation, (see appendix 1) teaches young adults some of the key life skills that will allow them to develop happy and productive lives. Topics like developing an identity, building self-esteem and self-confidence, managing emotions, money matters, communication and uncovering natural talents, (see appendix 2) would all be explained and taught in a manner that would promote good ideals and well-rounded individuals.

 Activity- circulation of photos  Awareness is the ability to perceive, to feel, or to be conscious of events, objects or sensory patterns.  Self-awareness

 Self esteem is how you feel about yourself.  It is very important because it affects how you think and even how you relate to other people.  Self esteem is crucial and is a cornerstone of a positive attitude towards living.

 Activity- make a list of five of your positive qualities and one negative.

 Don’t compare yourself with other people.  Never put yourself down.  Accept all compliments with “thank you.”

I value myself I am confident and self-assured I feel good about me I deserve to be happy

 Self confidence primarily refers to us having a positive and realistic perception of ourselves and our abilities.  Lack of self-confidence is characterized by: self-doubt, sensitivity to criticism, distrust, feelings of being unloved.

 Think positively about yourself.  Set goals that are realistic and will meet your expectations.  Count the positive things, not the negative.  Keep learning  Be courageous

 Appreciate  Don’t and learn to love yourself. ask others to love you first.  Respect choices. yourself and make positive

 Relationships are there to help us learn and grow towards our full potential.  Look to your relationships to enhance you – not to fill a void.

 The road to financial harmony begins in your head, not in the bank.  Your greatest assets are your mind and your heart.  Uncover your gifts, talents and abilities.

 A budget is a money plan.  It tells you if you are living within your means.  A budget reveals to you where you’re spending too much money.

Your Life Does Not Get Better By Chance, It Gets Better By The Choices That You Make Moment By Moment
