 Historically, community education classes were offered in high schools and religious institutions; Natural transition to Community College setting  Edmund J. Gleazer Jr. President (1958-1981), American Association of Community and Junior Colleges (AACJA)  Emphasized “community” in the community college  Life-long learning  Assisting with community issues  Link among community organizations HISTORY OF COMMUNITY EDUCATION

 Commission on the Future of Community Colleges  “the term community should be defined not only as a region to be served, but also as a climate to be created”. Cohen and Brawer (2008, 9. 316)  Community Colleges as a center of community life  Community College as a place to build relationships between individuals and organizations This philosophy speaks to the function of community education COMMUNITY COLLEGE AS CONNECTOR

 What is the Value of Community Education to the Community? VALUE TO THE COMMUNITY

 Community Defined  People who live or work in a shared geographic area and have values, beliefs, needs or interests that connect them  Community Development Defined  Purposeful action designed to empower individuals and/or groups to create positive social, political, economic and/or cultural change in their community  Deliberate attempt to work together to shape the future of a shared community  Examples: Community Garden, Transit Oriented Development, Art Murals, Cultural Festival, Community Lending Library, Neighborhood Night Out COMMUNITY AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Community Empower Educate Raise Awareness Create Social Connection Opportunity to Gather Build Trust CREATING COMMUNITY

 What elements are necessary in a place for community development to take place?  How does community education foster a sense of community?  How does community education support community development?  Marketing and Outreach  Community Education appeals to a broad range of individuals  Creates a greater awareness of the community college  Funding Stream  Community education as fee funded, grant funded or funded by partner organization  Note - Some programs funded similar to vocational training  Connect with Taxpayers and Business Community  Build relationships with voters and potential funders VALUE TO COMMUNITY COLLEGE

 Is the community college spread too thin?  Does community education take time, money or resources away the other functions?  Does community education devalue or create a lesser perception of the community college? DOWNSIDE TO COMMUNITY EDUCATION
