The Certified Bamboo Market : The Certified Bamboo Market How using Moso bamboo ( Phyllostachys pubescens ) can create Green Ujamaa for the Textile Market By: Marlene Jackson Why We Need a Share of this Market for Textile Use (part 1 of 2 ) : Created by: Marlene Jackson on 05-31-08 2 Why We Need a Share of this Market for Textile Use (part 1 of 2 ) There is a raising movement toward more sustaining living to avoid further pollution of the earth’s natural resources. Our mother Africa still has much of the most pristine areas in the world that haven't been devastated by industrialization, and we should strive to keep it that way. Why We Need a Share of this Market for Textile Use ( part 2 of 2) : Created by: Marlene Jackson on 05-31-08 3 Why We Need a Share of this Market for Textile Use ( part 2 of 2) Because of this ever emerging organic demand, I believe that Afrika, and to be more specific, Ghana can be a raising star in the development of organic processing and manufacturing of wearable textiles. In this slide presentation we will explore how and where the bamboo can be grown and the types of textiles it can be used for. Why Bamboo?-http://www.carolewang.com/bamboo.cgi : Created by: Marlene Jackson on 05-31-08 4 Why Bamboo?-http://www.carolewang.com/bamboo.cgi How is wearing bamboo apparel good for our environment? Wearing bamboo apparel has many benefits for our earth. First, unlike synthetic manmade fibers, bamboo is fully renewable and can be grown year after year without any negative environmental impacts. It is able to grow naturally in large amounts without the use of any pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers, preventing lots of harmful chemicals from entering our atmosphere. And here is one of the best things about bamboo – bamboo can absorb up to 5 times as much CO2 and other green house gases and release 35% more oxygen than an equivalent traditional tree will. Since stalks continually grow from the same sets of roots, bamboo does not need to be replanted in order to continue growing and the speed in which it grows is astronomical – up to 75 feet in just 45-60 days. The bottom line is this: Higher demand for bamboo clothes = more bamboo farms = more bamboo plants = cleaner, sweeter, healthier air for all to enjoy. Nothing beats that! Can Moso bamboo grow in the US : Created by: Marlene Jackson on 05-31-08 5 Can Moso bamboo grow in the US Yes! It can be grown in areas in the many regions Botanically categorized as a grass and not a tree, bamboo just might be the world’s most sustainable resource. It is the fastest growing grass and can shoot up a yard or more a day. Bamboo reaches maturity quickly and is ready for harvesting in about 4 years. Bamboo does not require replanting after harvesting because its vast root network continually sprouts new shoots which almost zoom up while you watch them, pulling in sunlight and greenhouse gases and converting them to new green growth. And bamboo does this the natural way without the need for petroleum-guzzling tractors and poisonous pesticides and fertilizers. (appendix 3) ( note: can be harvesting sooner for textiles) Can Moso bamboo grow in the Ghana/Africa(Below: is an example of how this proposal we can be used for textiles) : Created by: Marlene Jackson on 05-31-08 6 Can Moso bamboo grow in the Ghana/Africa(Below: is an example of how this proposal we can be used for textiles) YES!! http://www.ghana.mid.ru/0img/Ghanaforum.pdf. PROJECT TITLE: Manufacture of bamboo products for export PROJECT SUMMARY: Project Concept The project seeks to establish production of bamboo products including panels, flooring, furniture boards and plywood. The waste will be used to produce charcoal. The production facility, which would be located in Takoradi would focus on utilizing high grade bamboo from local stocks. The products would mainly be exported to the regional markets. In addition, the project would seek to expand the plantation by establishing a 500 hectares bamboo plantation. African Fabric Market Takeover : Created by: Marlene Jackson on 05-31-08 9 African Fabric Market Takeover “The image above contains fabric that I bought from Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Congo (but made in Côte d'Ivoire or European countries). Little known fact: most African cloth is actually fabricated in Scandinavian countries with designs created by African stylists. So the cloth I bought on the market is most probably made in Europe rather than in Africa. European cloth with African appeal.” (http://007inafrica.blogspot.com/2005/08/cloth.html ) Creating Our own Goods Again : Created by: Marlene Jackson on 05-31-08 10 Creating Our own Goods Again I opened my shop, Anuli Fashions, in Handsworth, back in 1998, because I wanted to share the wealth of African culture, fashion and design with people in the west.  Felica dressed in an African skirt suit But more importantly for me, dealing with African fashion has given me an opportunity to actually feel part of the wider African community because my people come to me for designs. It’s wonderful!“By Felicia Nwokedi pictured” Look at the variety of item made by Africans : Created by: Marlene Jackson on 05-31-08 11 Look at the variety of item made by Africans At one time these glorious fabrics were made from Fabric outside of Africa? This has changed. So by introducing bamboo and other eco blended textiles to manufacture we can corner more of the market “Originally African wax fabrics were imported from Holland but in the past years industries have grown in African countries that now manufacture these fabrics. African people are dark in complexion so we like to wear something that brighten us up. These fabrics reflect our passion for colors. “By Felicia Nwoked” What Type of Textiles can be made from Bamboo ( Part 1 of 5 ) : Created by: Marlene Jackson on 05-31-08 12 What Type of Textiles can be made from Bamboo ( Part 1 of 5 ) http://www.bambrotex.com/bamboo_fiber.pdf Bamboo intimate apparelsinclude sweaters, bath-suits, mats, blankets, towels have comfortable hand, special luster and bright colors, good water absorbance. The possibilities of eco-textile design are, perhaps due to consumerist education and demand, becoming seemingly endless. It is a very exciting time for all university students of textile design as it is for eco-conscious consumers and researchers of this subject. DBWT(UK) hopes to put its valuable research into creating sustainable solutions for all mankind, production workers and consumers alike, to offer sustainable eco-textile solutions for both consumerist and manufacturer satisfaction and well being. www.denisebirdwoventextiles.com/fibres.php Bamboo in the Household Market : Created by: Marlene Jackson on 05-31-08 24 Bamboo in the Household Market Home Fashion Market: Beddinghttp://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/green-ideas/bamboo-sheets-from-target-and-beyond-036386 : Created by: Marlene Jackson on 05-31-08 25 Home Fashion Market: Beddinghttp://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/green-ideas/bamboo-sheets-from-target-and-beyond-036386 Bamboo = Antibacterial bedding. “We've been reading about bamboo sheets (and blankets and quilts), but have never slept on them.
